Timing

I have a 87tc motor in my sandrail. In order for the motor to run good under boost I had to increase the base timing to 30. Before i did this it would go flat at 3-4 lb. boost.I think this was because the timing was being retarded to far. 10deg. atdc at about 3000rpm. Im getting a 25 code in koer scan.(no knock sensor detected). Knock sensor is new and I have double checked wiring. Any ideas on problem would be greatly appreciated. thanks jp

Sounds like you are not disconnecting the spout connector. It is the computers advance. Consider it to be the same as a vac hose on a points distributor.

It is a yellow wire right at the distributor plug. It will either have been cut and spliced or have a snap together connector or a removeable pill. Disconnect that wire , set base timing to 10-13 degrees and reconnect it.

I will agree with GT350R. Alot of people do this and it causes problems. Depending on the year it can have different style plugs.
Also when you get the engien running the way you want, try disconnecting the knock sensor you might be surprised at how much power you gain. The factory knock sensor is way to sensitive, and known for pulling timing for unrelated noises like valvetrain.
Also dont worry about that code. tou have to hit the intake with a hammer durring the test, or somthing like that forthe knock sensor to be detected.
Good luck.
You might also want to check Turboford.org since there are other guys over there that have 2.3Ts in rails also.

Thanks for your replys. I do disconnect the spout to set base timing.and this thing runs the same with or without the knock sensor hooked up.The eec will adv. timing to 45-50 and then pull it all out. I've had three different eecs. and they all react the same.I'm pulling my hair out on this one(oops don't have any). Thanks for your input

Might want to try a different TFI if you have one laying around. One failure mode of the TFI is that it doesnt advance the timing as far as the EEC tells it to via the SPOUT circuit. If you set the base timing w/o SPOUT to 10 deg, and then plug the SPOUT back in, how much does the timing advance? At hot idle, it should advance 15 to 20 deg over the base value.

Have you run the codes?

Are you sure your cam timing is correct?

Thanks for your reply Jeff. Tfi is New. With base timing @10 The eec timing is about 25, Cam timing seems correct with pointer and straight line to acc. pulley. New timing belt. Esslinger crank pulley and pointer. I checked tdc with #1 plug removed. I do get a 25 code.( No Knock sensor detected)Thanks again!jp I also get acouple of other codes not related to engine function (brakes on/off). Idon't have these circuits because of my application.

Is this an 87-88 TC computer?
Do you have the ACT hooked up to the intake?
This is a very strange problem.

It is a 87tc eec Man trans. comp. The act is hooked up but haven't spent alot of time with it.I have spent alot of time trying to get this problem figured out along with 2 Mechs. one at the ford garage. I keep thinking it is something simple. the motor has been out of the car for about 7 yrs. Is supposed to be a 14k mile motor. I did the same thing with a 84tc motor and it ran like a house afire. (1350 lb buggy). So I have a little confidence in my wiring ability.(soldering,etc). This motor runs perfect until you start getting boost. Thanks for your input . I will spend some time with the act.jp
