Well i had to make a choice and i have sold the 84... I regret having to get rid of it, but i can not afford to fix both. But i sold it to my cousin who has been helping me fix it, and will now be his first car :-) and its only across the street :-)

If i install a new t3/t4 hybrid turbo on my 87 with the stock cam, will it be worth a darn? or a waist of time? i was getng a bob log with it too and 3" exhaust eventually. The factory cam and headgasket is in good shape and really dont want to have to pull thehead for a cam swap

I would invest in a good roller cam before I got into upgrading the turbo. You don't have to pull the head to replace the cam, HOWEVER I would go ahead and replace the head gasket and such anyway if they are original! I've pulled 3 2.3T heads, all of which had the factory "good shape" Ford gasket and let me tell you, they were NOT in good shape!

The first thing I do when I acquire a new 2.3T car is pull the head and inspect EVERYTHING! New head gasket, new valve stem seals, new cam oil seal, etc.

How many miles does the said car have? The factory slider cam may just be on it's way out anyway...

You do not need to pull the head to do a cam swap, I did mine in about 2 hours, basically take upper intake off, drop radiator fan assembly, and take out the 2 long motor mount bolts, jack the motor till cam clears core support, all I needed to swap cams (too wise not including the sockets and or wrenches to remove intake valve cover etc..) sockets to remove cam gear and plate in back and a medium size pry bar (to depress valve and remove the cam followers) Make sure to put piston on TDC on each cylinder when depressing valve and a medium screwdriver in spark plug hole just incase keepers come out and the valve falls.

There is nothing wrong with a stock cam. ET/MPH: - best 60' - 1.676, 12.25 @ 110.85 MPH In a SVO with stock cam, gear, valves, and T3.
Sorry to here of your loss. Hope your cousin has fun with it.

I agree with Ol Sluggo, I did my ranger cam swap outside of some smoother idling the cam did not do much for me, but I have not upgraded to bigger turbo as of yet or put on the 3" inch downpipe (courtesy of ol Slug himself) as of yet

well compression test got me 149, 146, 146, 149 and it has 141,000 miles... Just too lazy to pull the head off i guess.. or open a can of worms. I have to replace the valve cover gasket soon, i will inspect the cam and go from there i guess.

These cars are notorious for eating cams, which is why I suggested going ahead and doing a roller swap. If you R&R the head, get new cam bearings installed. Look into getting oil control bearings put in instead of the stock bearings and it will help to reduce valvetrain wear.

There is nothing wrong with upgrading the turbo before the cam. Many, many people have ran VERY fast with the stock cam. This doesn't mean the stock cams are great for performance, it just means that if you blow enough air at them (25+psi) that you can make alot of power without opening up the engine.

Since you have an 87 with the smaller IHI turbo, upgrading the turbo first seems like a great idea.

yea, thats what i think too, the ihi spools good, but my car falls on its butt at around 4500-5000 badly. Im going to get a stinger 3" exhaust system too

Idea is a t3/t4 hybrid, 3" exhaust, adj fuel reg., and a bypass valve :-) should be a big difference even on a stock cam and head
