Time to R&R....

On the way home today, She puked. Downshifted from 3rd to 2nd, she sputtered, and threw the check engine light. Would not re-start, but the starter sure did spin the motor quickly. So, without even digging into it, I'm reasonably certain it spit the timing belt, since this one has 112K on it,(207K on the car) and I was getting the vibe she was getting ready to fail. I will definetly verify the cause of failure first, but I'm preparing the replacement drivetrain for its turn. I am replacing the timing belt, oil pump, water pump, thermostat, clutch, rear main seal, and will be installing the K&N fender mount, Gillis valve, and a 3in downpipe. I have the pst front end kit, and u-joints, and will do all that when shes apart since it should be off the road for awhile. Unless I find the tps or something real simple is what caused the failure. I doubt it, though.

If anyone thinks there is something else I need to do while the engine is on my shop floor, please do not hesitate, other than to tell me to do a bunch of porting or real radical, extensive mod type stuff. Not interested with this car. She gets me to and from, and needs to be reliable and not finicky.

Thanks!

personally i'd re bearing it and check all the crank surfaces while its out and maybe a new cam while you are at it...

I second what Methos said. If you are going to pull it apart for an oil pump, do the bearings. might consider re ringing it also.

Some head work would be a good idea at that mileage. Get the guides checked for wear, a valve job and new seals and springs.

I am assuming the CEL came on after the motor quit running, right? If so, I dont think you have an electrical / sensor problem... the CEL is on whenever the key is on and the EEC isnt getting a PIP signal, which it sure doenst get with the motor not turning.

Just in case you didn't know...when you throw a timing belt, the pistons will never hit the valves, these engines have clearance there. I had to sweat that one myself once.

I may have not been clear. I have a 80K mile complete 88 engine-trans combo on the floor already. I will be doing all the stuff I'd mentioned to THAT one, not the 200K+ engine in the car currently. So I'm not concerned so much about the rotating assembly and head, just felt that since everything is so accessible, I'd do the 'wear' items. I checked the dead engine in the car and slid the belt back and forth on the upper pulley. I'll just R&R the timing belt and see how much longer it'll go. That will buy me time to get the replacement finished and ready to swap in an afternoon. I want the downtime to be minimal, so preparation now saves me time later.

Jeff K.- Yep, got the CEL, pulled over to the shoulder, turned the key off, then back on to listen for the FP, heard it, cranked it over and it seemed like it spun very freely, so I knew it was the timing belt.

Kev- Yes, I knew that it would not hurt anything, so I was less concerned about replacing it before it failed.

I will keep you guys posted, and try to get some photos up.

Thanks,

Darryl
