time for the new year headgasket change!

Well, I was wondering why I only had heat when I'm driving at 55+ mph. At first I thought it was the radiator cap or thermostat. Switch them, but still no luck. Well, had radiator cap off and notice bubbles and the smell of gas.....Damn It!....so it's time for a new gasket.

At least the good thing is that while I'm driving my girlfriends car, she's driving mine (due to the fact that I drive 34 mile each way to work and it's only 3-4 for her). Well, after getting a little taste of the turbo coupe, she wants to go to the drag races with me (and I thought i was in love before this!).

Does she have a sister?? lol. I'm running 21 psi on a stock gasket, so it's only a matter of time. Definatly upgrade to a fel-pro while its apart. Good luck.

So the question is....do you get the really good gasket(1035) or the cheap (8993). New headbolts are nice idea too, I bought ARP. If you are not going to run lots of boost then new cheaper headbolts would be fine. IMHO

The stocker HG's were made by Felpro with a ford stamping. I think ARP's are a must but the 8993 will hold up fine. The 1035 is a better gasket , the thing is it does not compress as much as the 8993 so make sure all surfaces are perfect.

This is true but the stocker is black not blue. The same # is stamed into both. I bring in both because for some peope if it isnt ford it is crap? Either way the 1035 is a great gasket but I would rather blow a gasket than something else.

well, heres my 2C. i used the TTY bolts for awhile, with an 8993. what a rediculous mistake, dont ever use TTy's on a turbo car Big Grin . the reason i used them, ford doesnt make the 12pt factory standard ones anymore. if you order bolts for a turbo motor, youll get ranger bolts, and youll be disapointed(and $50 lighter). so if your car HAS the 12pt bolts already, and they look ok, not rusted or bent. just use those. the factory bolts will hold up for anywhere between 3 and 5 torque sequences. i have a set now from an 83, TQed once, that i will use with my new 1035.

moving on:

the issue with the 1035 is, it occasionally is STRONGER than the engine, and what i mean by that is, you may just crack the head before you blow the gasket. now, if you have a solid tune, good parts, and are confident in the setup of your motor, the 1035 is a great way NOT to have to do a HG everytime you drag race it. but if not, your asking for trouble. remember something else too, engine POWER (as far as i can tell) doesnt break head gaskets, its usually a bad tune(lean) that does it. so what i sayin is, find out WHY the HG blew, dont just change it and go.

GoodLuck

I agree and disagree with Jon

Using the headgasket as a fuse IMHO is a bad idea...
If the car is in good tune...all is good. You can blow or lift a headgasket from the powerlevel of the engine and not have any detentation. When was the last time you heard somebody taking out the bottom end in a turbocoupe????

Are engines are very tuff.... I like the better HG and new bolts so I do not have to change the HG again. Are heads crack anyways in my opinion, heck over heating is the biggest cause.

I drag race my car all the time....
I have had the methanol system shut off 3/4 down the track. The afr goes lean I start letting out, I hear rattling....ouch 13.5 afr ouch. I run mega base timing with the t3.

IMHO these engines are uber tuff for what they are....

I came from the turbobuick world. Never in a million years would they reuse headbolts. Heck even felpro headbolts would be fine.

Just my $.02

I use TTY head bolts and the cheap 8993 HG. One failure to date and that was MY fault. IT was rattling hard and I didn't lift.
NO TC and NO headaches.

I disagree with everyone but Glenn.

I blew a 1035 with a rattle that I thought it would handle using old 12 pts. I think it had more to do with surface finish in my case. Put in a 8993 with the same bolts and cut the timing 2* and it's been holding up great.

Unless you know the finish is right, or stock uncut, the 1035 will probably dissappoint most. Everyone does it different for different reasons. I like that mine works best on the cheap. Smile

Ben, how did you turn this into a best HG & bolt thread? What were you thinking?

Well, doug, the funny thing is that i was just stating the fact that i had to replace the headgasket (which is now actually the fact that i have to change out the shortblock). I really must stop racing firehawks, STI's, and Z06 vettes on 95.

As for headgaskets and head bolt, it is what works best for your combo sometimes! The 1035 and a set of ARP head stud are not always going to be the best. These are what I've used and my opinion.

For Bolts I have ran the stock 12 points and (was using) ARP studs. I like the studs for the fact they seem to have a little extra clamping force (though next time i'll go with the under cut ones)

As for head gaskets, well, I think I've used most on the market. The 1035 is great (I get them for around $42 , so they're not that bad price wise). The stocker 8993 works damn good for $13 and hold 17-18 psi damn good. I also use to like the Detroit headgaskets also, back when they had an orange finish and really bit into the head.
