Isn't there an adjustable tensioner pulley on this motor? If there is, you will need to pull the tensioner back before you can get the belt back on. I have a repair manual, be back in a few...

Red has got it right and yes you have to remove the crank pully. You need to pull back the tensioner to get the belt back on. Once you have the tensioner pulled back lock it into place with the bolt. Also check the tensioner pulley bearings while you have the belt off. Cloyes make a nice replacement for it. To set the timing pull the spout conector and then set the timing with a light. should be at 10*BTDC from the factory.

Ok, in the repair manual, the belt directions are as follows:

1.Loosen the belt tensioneer adjustmen bolt, then position spreader tool or a breaker bar on the tensioner roll pin and retract the belt tensioner.
2.Remove Timing Belt
3.Check Sprockets for wear, cracks, and burrs on the teeth.
4.make sure the valve timing mark on the camshaft sprocket is aligned with the pointer. Install the timbing belt over the crankshaft sprcket, then over the auxilary shaft sprocket. (At this point the sprocket should be on.)

Hope that helps

If you need it, let me know, and I will copy over the section on this post for you.

OK, I was hoping that I did not have to pull the bottom crankshaft pully , and just could slip the new belt in the gap , with out pulling it off . BUMMER , Will start the job today , got the new belt , and with no help , will be todays job of the day . Car only has 69K miles , will I need a pully puller to get the bottom pully off ?? Also I will look over the bearing and all to make sure all is good , should be . Book here tells me I can slip it on , and to make sure Im at top dead center with the cap rotor off to make sure its on the #1 piston . OK, well Im on a early start , Thanks for all the help , wish me luck . DW

The bottom pulley should come right off after you remove the center bolt. If it doesn't want to move use two big screwdrivers behind it and wiggle it back and forth until it comes off.

Did you pull the spout plug while you set the timing? It should be set at 10* BTDC with the spout disconected.

Yes , bit there is also a what looks to be a time mark on the dist. pulley and was not sure other than to put it at the #1 piston , when you do that theres the cam mark that almost lines up with the mark way down on the Dist. pulley , they almost line up accross from each other , yes I did pull the small little rubber plug , witch shows the time mark , crank pully only goes on one way , Hanes says to have the keyway at 12 O clock , so I did that . Should have it done today , just had to put the plastic cover back on and the drive belts and then a test drive .

The aux gear doesn't make a difference where it is pointing as long as the dizzy it pointing at the #1 cap tower. When I talk about the spout conector we are talking about the electricall conector that lets the computer be in controll of the timing. It should be a yellow wire that is coming out of the TFI harness. The newer 2.3t's have a rectangle plug that you can just pull the top out of. The older ones have a round conector that you pull apart. Make sure it is disconected when you time it with a light. Then reconect it so the putter is back in controll.
