Throttle cable

I have a 87 turbocoupe with the older style no notch valve cover. I made a 3/4" alum. spacer so the upper intake clears it. I also have a 91 SC throttle body mounted to that. It seems now the cable is about 1"- 1 1/4" to long. The spring on the end of the cable that goes to TB bottoms out before the throttle plate. If I cut the cable at the pedal side and replaced the stops, I think I would still have same problem. Can I just cut the spring shorter?
