The infernal squeaking!

Righto, I have a constant squeak under my hood somewhere, sounds like a belt or whatnot.

The only thing is, it goes away when I put light pressure on the clutch pedal....

Any clue? I highly doubt pulleys or tensioners would silence when the clutch is pressed...

Maybe the throwout bearing is caught up on something and when you put harder pressure on it, it stops???

The Tbearing shouldnt have anything pushing on it until the pedal is pressed. Usually Tbearing noise starts when you press the pedal, cause it then makes contact with the pressure plate. When a Tbearing is starting to lose its lube and doesnt spin easy, it digs into the pressure plate springs making a metal-metal whine.

But maybe there is something else going wrong and your Tbearing is the culprit. Or maybe your input shaft bearing is having problems...?

If it sounds kind of like a bird chirping, then most likely one side of the metal retainer springs on your clutch fork has broken; repair requires a new clutch fork.

This is a very common problem and I agree, is annoying as heck.

Do a search for clutch forks and you'll find everything (and more) that you need to know.

Yup, mine is easily audible over the exhaust, extremely annoying. Nothing I can do though, the retainer was broke as described above. New clutch fork would probably cost more than the car is worth.

New clutch fork is only like $15 direct from Ford. Unless they've gone up since I bought one a few years ago. It may also be the throwout bearing going bad. Contrary to popular belief, there IS supposed to be preload on them, and they will eventually start squeaking if there is insufficient preload.

Clutch forks are now obsolete from Ford. I bought a new one a year or so ago for future use from Vintage Parts, who bought all the old Ford stock.

I would bet a tank of gas that your throwout bearing is what is causing the 'chirp'. Did you get the spec clutch kit? If so then that throwout bearing is junk and you need to get a new one from your local parts store, preferably one that has an all metal body.

My spec kit came with a throwout bearing and I installed it. The damn thing chirped like there was no tomorrow. After having the tranny out 4 times I then decided to get rid of it and go with one that was from the parts house. VIOLA!!!! The chirp went away and has not came back.

Just me $0.02 worth!

I got a stock replacement clutch kit installed from a local dealer. Brand new stuff, and all the garages who I talked to to get it installed said that the company was quite nice and reputable.

It was very much a case of "We can't warrenty the clutch, but if you got it from those guys, no worries, they always do great stuff"

But even so, with it likely being the throw out bearing, one, will it be any problem other than annoying? And two, would it be too difficult for an apartment parking lot (barely equipped) mechanic like me?
