Another series of problems. Alternator goes out and about 3 days later, battery won't start the car, so had to get it towed home. Get those problems taken care of, and suddenly the engine turns over but won't start. Track that down to a bad TFI. Distributor is old anyway, so go to NAPA and order a rebuild and TFI. Parts guy orders a distributor for a super coupe instead of a turbo coupe. Gets the "right" one on the second try. Go to install it this morning, and the housing is several thousandths to large to fit into the block. Happy Day!!

I had the same thing happen on an Autozone reuilt. The dizzy had Motorcraft cast into it but if was too big. I massage it for a couple hours only to find out that the alleged new PIP was DOA also

It's ridiculously simple to rebuild the distributor yourself. The only specialized tool you'll need is some sort of gear puller. Read along and see.

Ditto what evintho says. No puller needed. Just put a block of wood on each side of the housing with it upside down and hammer the shaftt off the gear using a brass hammer or smomething softer than the shaft. The housing holds the gear while the shaft slides through. A slightly larger socket the shaft can fit through works great for driving it back on, like the cardomain picture. The only real pita is aiming for the roll pin hole. Adding a dedicated ground down socket for the TFI is bonus.

Sorry partial hijack here, related issue
When I did mine I used a replacement gear and it was only drilled on one side for the roll pin. I drilled the other side which was a PITA to do. I'd like to know what others have done when using an aftermarket gear.

I've replaced a few gears and I've always had to drill the other side.I think some holes are offset and others seem to be through the center.I may be wrong, but that was my observation.

sorry about all the mixups....
I thought supercoupes had distributorless ignition????? coil pack and module, I know the crank sensor goes where the distributor goes on a non supercharged 3.8

Just saying if Im right....that would be a total mixup....
