Today i drove an 88 auto and man it was shit, the boost gauge only went up to 8psi or so. The thing is so slow, took forever to hit 60 and i had a hard time getting it to down shift, the guy at the dealer says " its a real quick car". That whole experience made me depressed to have mine. But as soon as i got bake in mine it was all good.

Sounds like the time I test drove an '87 Cougar LS with the 5-liter. It rode like shit, handled like shit, accelerated poorly, stopped poorly, had a lot of road noise, etc. I drove it for about 15 minutes and the damn thing actually wore me out! It felt so great to get back in my TC.

I never knew the Turbo Coupes were such a big step up over the base models. In addition to the obvious power upgrade, the improvements in the suspension and brakes are so major that they make it feel like an entirely different car.

I agree about the automatics. But there are exceptions. I've got an 88 TC w/auto. It will put you back into your seat, not as well as a hopped up 5 speed but it still feels pretty good. She's not quite stock though either. [Image: biggrin.gif]

mine's an auto, you loose 40hp when you get an auto instead of the stick. mostly because of the dual turbo exhuast. if you put one of those on there, you gain back 20-40hp. top it off with a K&N, it'll be just as quick

Umm....No. The autos were detuned 40 horsepower because their transmissions are so weak. The horsepower loss comes from the fact that the turbo isn't allowed to produce more than 10 PSI. A boost valve will rectify that situation, but nothing will help that tranny. I'm sure opening up the exhaust more would increase some power...but that's not the reason for the difference. ( I learned all that from this board (: )

127k miles in January when I bought it for $200. 138k now. A few mods for more power in the planning. (:

I have an 87, auto and every once in awhile it gets up to 13 14 psi, but normally its around 8 to 10. its totally stock with 130,000 miles on it. when it gets up there in psi it prety damb quick. but its only when it wants to, so when it does it suprises me.

I have a 87 TC with 130,000 miles so far all ive done is drop it 1 1/4 in in front and i havnt got the 1 in lowering springs in the rear yet, and put in a system. future plans are to do some body work and 17 in wheels, ground effects( dont know where to get them yet) and enginge upgrades.

I've got a auto, don't drive it right now because I cannot afford inspection, but mine pulls pretty decent. I've got a few tricks up it's sleeve. Once I get it inspected I'll drag anyone with a 5-Speed(mostly stock), I'd love to see the differences. But yea, the stock setup for it is pretty slow, the boost was rediculous, and shifted slow. There are several cheap methods you can use to make it stronger, the major problem with an auto is because of the weak bell housing and seals. Anyway, just trying to save the rep of an auto, it's the same deal with any car, you just have to find it's potential.

Revamp, I'd love to hear what your methods are. If I could get it just a bit more fast, then maybe it won't be so bad.
I'm just considering boost control and large exhaust. What can you do to make the tranny stronger?
