TC mods?

I've only owned my TC for about 4 hours, but I know I'm gonna get a ticket in this thing(18 months without one). The engine runs strong and boost is great! I drove it home from Les' and it was getting dark so I opted to drive the Isuzu to Autozone for some odds'n'ends. I hated it, no power and it handled like a slug on tranquilizers! I've got about $300 to spend on upgrades/repairs($600, but I'd like to save some...). What would be a nice bang-for-the-buck upgrade? The exhaust is newer so I'll wait till after it rusts out to change that. I was thinking a K&N, but I'm not sure what else. Gotta do a little customizing [Image: wink.gif] How hard would it be to install a more accurate boost guage?

"but I know I'm gonna get a ticket in this thing".
Congratulations on the new acquisition. Look at it this way, you will be continuing a fine tradition that Les started, hehe! But you have to beat 97 in a 65.

K&N is a good start but you want to wait till your exhaust goes before replacing?
A good portion of the performance gain is gonna be in hi-flo mufflers. Not that expensive really.
I said the same thing when I bought mine.
Someone had just put a cheap midas system on and I was going to wait till they rusted out.
Well you should have seen the cheap mufflers I took off of.... sorry I'm rambling.
Also might want to consider a boost control valve of some kind after you get a good gauge.

I speed right by cops in my TC I never get pulled over. On the other hand I drive my mustang and a cop will follow me for miles even if im not doing anything wrong.
Only once did a cop come after me in my TC. It was 1:00 in the morning I saw the cop throw his lights on in a parking lot and come after me. Well I throw it into second and whacked the throttle. I knew all the back roads where I was, so at the first side road I came to I slowed down to bout 60mph said a prayer and turned the wheel. Then mashed the throttle again I knew no cop car could do that. Bout a half mile down that twisty road was an intersection I could see no headlights coming so I blasted through it at about 70. Flu up the road about a mile and took another hair-raising turn to the left this time. I quickly approached my house about 3 miles up the road, but I shut my lights off about a half-mile before my house just in case the cop was on a side road weighting for me. After blasting thought another stop sign I pulled in my driveway. I got out fast and ran around back of my house so I would not set off the motion lights in front. I went in the back door and just said I hope I never have to do that again, my brother gave me a strange look and I went to bed. The reason I ran from the cop is a hole another story. But that has been my only encounter in my TC with the cops in the year and a half or so I have had my TC. My mustang I can’t even count the times I has got me in trouble.

So you bought one off Les huh, which?... the one with oil on the engine or without? If it's with the oil, degreasing it should cut 1/2 sec off your 1/4 time alone! LOL Ooops sorry Les, couldn't resist... the memories of Carlisle this year, plus it's been awhile since I could get to the board.

Check out the "Beginner Mods for HP" on the Tech Articles page. http://www.turbotbird.com/techinfo/Mods/Mods01.htm

By all means the first improvement is a K&N filter.

For the money ($39.oo), a Gillis Boost Control Valve http://www.boostvalve.com/index2.html is a must.

To really benefit from the two you will need to install a free flowing exhaust (straight thru design) like Dynomax Super Turbos or Ultraflows. Do NOT use baffle types like Flowmasters, you will only be hindering performance. Note... it has been proven that a SINGLE 2.5" or 3" exhaust system will outflow any dual setup on the TC's. The advantages between 2.5 and 3 are virtually nill other than the 3" is more expensive and you will have a hard time find a shop that can get 3" pipe to bend/fit over the rear axle due to lack of clearence.

When doing the exhaust, an extra $125 can get you a 3" downpipe that will give you the biggest performance gains in the exhaust, but only with the free flowing muff(s).

After these mods, it's a matter of tweaking the timing a few degrees, porting and polishing, high energy ignition system, large fuel pump, adj, fuel press regulator, and if you're really into it you can add a water or alcohol injection system and maybe even a NOS kit but be prepared to do some engine work after several bottles.'

Best of luck to ya. Best way to avoid getting a ticket is just make sure you stay in front of Les, the cops have him pegged locally. LMAO

You laugh, but it's true... They know me by first name now. [Image: smile.gif]

Anyway, he bought the 'clean' one from what you've seen. In case you didn't hear, I replaced that oil-maker in the gold TC and powerwashed everything!!! It took forever (4 days-morning til dark) but, it looks great. It feels great. Ahhhhhh... finally.

Oh Yeah, the damn thing is seized up. Never even started.

I got another block from GT350 (Thanks! Louis)and will be starting the process over again hopefully tonight.

Nate, You can bring your clean Turbo Coupe butt up here and help you know... [Image: smile.gif]
