TC handbrake

I was sitting in my cousin's 2.3L auto 88 mustang the other day. I looked at the console and noticed it was essentialy the same thing where the plate around the shifter meets the rest of the console.

If I relocated my switches, would the Mustang console fit right into place? I realize that a new e-brake line would have to be custom fabbed out of a mustang line. I think it would be a huge step up for the drivability of the car if I could swap that shitty foot brake for a hand one.

The Mustang dash is a bolt-in, but I'm not sure about the console. If it wasn't an EXACT fit, I'm sure you could make it work. I can't remember how the Mustang console and dash fit together at the bottom ...

Good point - I can't stand the foot brake.

If I can find out if they are the same size at that one point, then I can either fix it into place, or do some hack-n-slash fab.

Come on guys. I can't be the first one to think of this. What do you know?

Oldraven and Phils,
Help me up...I want to jump on the band wagon! I am not too pleased with the consoles of the TC. Phil the comment on the Mustang...have you tried to put an 87 up mustang dash in an 87 up TC? I like the looks of the "pod" style dash better (okay I am looking for a little more room for the coffee cup on the ride to work.
I will try to get to the Junk yard this weekend and take a look at the fit (if they have a TC and Mustang with consoles) I pulled a an 88 tc dash out of the JY this winter to replace my cracked and rotted one...but if a mustang dash will bolt up I will have a blue dash for sale in the parts section soon.
Let me know what you find out ([email protected])as it is supposed to rain all weekend here.

I haven't put a Mustang dash in a bird

but ...

I was planning to buy a Mustang a while back, and if I did, I was going to put the Bird dash in it (the whole thing)

I haven't done it personally, but I saw pics of a conversion and heard first-hand from someone who did

the dash / windshield profiles match and it bolts in

the problem is - I don't know of any easy way to mix and match the two. Look at the Bird and Stang dashes and consoles together. I think it will require cutting.

Don't get me wrong -- you could swap the entire Bird dash for a Stang one. Trying to fit the Stang console in there with your existing dash would be difficult. I think the best way would be to leave the current dash and console, then turn into the Mustang console right behind the shifter, so you pick up the e-brake. Then you'd have to match the colors, though.

It's not possible to put the Stang console in directly. The front stack for the stereo and climate controls is a completely different peice. I think the only way is to cut both all the way down at the points I marked in the pic, then you'll have a two peice console. As long as it's kept clean, it should look like a factory setup. I've got an 88 stang in my back yard right now, so I'll take a look when I get home at how wide the peices are at that point. If it's good to go, I'll let you know.

It does sound like a promising idea , if the width is the same at that point you could use some plastic scraps from the one console as backing pieces and glue the two together, some interior paint would fix the color problem but changing the brake cables may be the most fun of teh whole project.

Well, it's not the same width. I think the only option is to cut the two in half and start trying to fab it together. It's not going to be easy to keep a clean look, but I'm sure it's possible. Just a hinderance, not enough to keep me from trying.
