TBird running!!! Well Maybe not..

Well now that I got my TBird running, (remember all I did was drop in a dizzy and retimed the car) it's now pinging (tapping) everytime I drive it. Has the sound like there isn't any (or low) oil in the car. Drove it to San Antonio and back to Austin, and it was tapping the whole time. Something is wrong. It wasn't making that sound before. Well after looking at it today with some car nuts, it's believed it's coming from the #1 piston area. Possibly that lifter being loose. Well tomorrow I will tear into it. I thought it could be timing issue but it was timed correctly. Fires up fine, just when I start driving it, it makes the tapping sound. You could almost hear the sound coming from the front (#1 piston) area. It increases when I accelerate also.

Sneaky intake leaks can cause pinging, but I think that's usually only under load. Is it clacky? If it has a rythem I would assume it's related to the engine turning, mechanicaly related, maybe a rocker coming loose. If it seems sparatic I would guess ignition. Maybe it's time for a set of anti-pump lifters?

Does the engine have a slider cam? If so, have you been using an oil with a high ZDDP content or using a ZDDP Additive? Modern oils have severely reduced Zinc content and the lack of Zinc seriously accelerates slider cam wear.

Pull the valve cover and have a look at the cam. See if it shows signs of wear (deep ridge) from the followers. If there are no signs of obvious wear, you may have a problem with a lazy or worn out HLA (hydraulic valve adjuster) or two.
If the cam is worn, then the entire valve train will need attention. You will also need to follow what Jeff stated above.

I'll be pull the valve cover off tomorrow (today...it's 2:17am). I have a good spare cylinder head from my other T-Bird that was error free. I might just swap them out then repair whatever damage is on the cylinder head I'm pulling (unless it's a simple repair and I can do it without pulling the head)

If you wind up wanting a reman, its cheaper (in my area) to skip the machine shop. PO of my bird stuck a remanned turbo head from rockauto on and I haven't had any problems. Car fires up with a few turns of the starter, them valves is sealed Big Grin
