tbird revival

Well after over 3 years I finally have the funds available to revive the old bird. I'm very excited to get it up and running but it needs a lot of work. First off the head needs to come back off so I can figure out why its burning so much oil (the head gasket blew and I had a machine shop cut the head down and now burns a quart of oil in 5 mins).

Second the abs relay completely melted one day and the harness is trashed and the brakes are pretty much like a brick.

Third I need a new distributor. Any help and info on any of this would be greatly appreciated.

I got a new Focus ST and need to keep the miles off it so instead of getting a beater I'm going to fix this up.

Why do you need a new distributor? If it has to be replaced, I would suggest finding a used one with a matching auxiliary shaft, or getting a parts store reman and swapping your original dizzy gear over to the reman dizzy.

I'm happy to see you're going to get 'er goin' again!

The shaft is just worn out and the pip and tfi is new so all I really need is a good used housing.

Would any 2.3 distributor work?

Did it burn that much oil before the head gasket issue? Did they check the head for cracks? Who put the head back together? If it didn't burn oil before, it shouldn't burn it now.

It never burned before, but like a dumb ass when the gasket blew I was on my way home from work and I stopped at the store and got like 10 gallons of water and every few miles I would stop and refill it. I know that was the stupidest possible thing i could do but I had no other way to get it home.

The machine shop milled it just enough to get flat and repaired a valve seat but im not sure what else they did, they hot tanked it to clean it and im not sure if they replaced the valve seals.... would it burn that much oil with bad seals. The coolant stays good and full so its not the gasket. Could I have messed up the rings?

Also is there a wiring diagram for the abs relay behind the intake on the firewall. One day it started clicking like crazy and completely melted to the bare wires. Thanks for all the help over the years by the way Pete. Smile

Are you sure they put valve seals in it at all? That was one of my first thoughts when I first read your post.

^^^^ Good call, Pete. Either no valve stem seals or the cheapo umbrella type seals which are as good as no valve seals at all.

I'm not sure if they even replaced them, they hot tanked it so i would assume they left them in there.

The head "should" be disassembled for hot tanking. I guessing that hot tanking would destroy most seals and gaskets,
