Taking off the head, got a question..

I'm taking the head off of my 88 TC, and I plan to leave the lower intake on the head when I remove it as per the tech article here on this site. My question is, what do I need to disconnet from the lower intake in order for it to come cleanly out of the car? The tech article says there is a hose on the bottom center but it doesn't mention the two sensors pointing at the firewall. Are those the only 3 things attached to it? The reason I ask is because it's just difficult to see, and I don't really have access to the bottom of the vehicle. Everything else tore down cleanly in about an hour, but I can't figure out how to get those 3 things disconnected, and I don't know if there is anything else. Thanks for any help.

IIRC fuel rail and "topside" wiring for the injectors, ect, oil pressure, knock and act sensor wiring (unplug the connectors - that's what the tech article refers to near the firewall), and lower intake hose. Get some bailing wire to really hold it all out of the way. It's been a while since I did it but I think I just undid all the spring clips for the fuel rail to get that out.

I assume the upper intake is already off and so also is the bracket that secures the dipstick tube and a wiring barrel connector. hth..

What Matt said. I think I was able to unbolt the fuel rail, take it of the injectors and gently move and tie it out of the way.

Those spring lock connections are a real PITA. I never took them off, just put them off to the side.

Here is a tip to make the job easier. Cut a piece of the serpentine belt that is long enough to reach the valve cover bolt holes. Use one on opposite sides of the head. And use the second to last holes. Put a hole in the belt and use a valve cover bolt with large fender washers and bolt it to the head. This will make a good handle to lift the head on and off. You can use two straps side to side and use a helper. This makes a great handle for the head lifting. We use this trick to remove and install all types of heads and it makes the job real easy. Smile

You may have a problem with the snap connectors also. They are sometimes hard to remove. Use the correct disconnect tool and twist the line slightly. This should release the line fairly easy. When installing the lines put a heavy coat of silicone dialetric compound on the fittings. This will make it a snap to disconnect them at a later time if necessary. Tom Senior. Smile

I will not be disconnecting the fuel lines. I'll just pull them off to the side. But that's a really good idea with the belt handles.

Hi 50 yes i am a pansie now. When i was a young fellow that is how i did it. But i developed a belly button hernia 10 yiers ago. The doctor said it was nothing so i ignored it. WRONG WRONG WRONG. It broke last yier and i had emergency surgery to repair it. I will use the strap method and continue to be a WIMP from now on. It hurt like HELL and i almost baught the ranch. Tom Senior I know you are just kidding but at 62 i have to be careful from now on Smile Cool

I tried the curling method on my sons car and needless to say my sons car needed a new header panel. I also tried to lifting the short block out with my son. Second new header panel. LOL!!

In your case what I do is just remove upper intake and remove the securing bolts for the fuel rail. Then I gently wiggle the injectors out of the lower intake without removing them from the rail. I then get a ziptie and secure the rail away from intake by ziptying it to the engine harness on the fire wall. No injectors removed, no snap rings, and no broken injector harness clips. Just my two cents
