I'm sure this has been covered before but couldn't find any threads via search; sorry.
When installing a replacement (right) rear tail light, I went ahead and put new bulbs in both lights. Figured what the heck.
Problem is, on the left, rear tail light, the 'outer' cover has separated from the main housing, which is still firmly installed inside the trunk. This gave me great access to change the bulbs but it is not obvious what anchors it to the inside housing. I don't want to head down the road and have the outer housing fall off!
Anybody know what is supposed to be anchoring the outer shell of the tail light to the inner housing?
thanks,
rocky

Years ago I had some condensation in one of mine so I took them apart to clean and reseal. I think I just used clear rtv.

Thanks, that confirms what I was thinking. I went ahead and put a bead of rtv on it a couple hours ago and will check it in the morning. But thanks!

There are supposed to be a couple metal spring clips that hold the inner and outer parts together. They are sealed with together with what I think is butyl rubber (gooey black stuff). RTV should do a good job holding them together.

I've used the gooey black stuff that comes in long rolls. I cheated and used small amounts of superglue in 2-3 points for added security

There are (I think) 3 of those spring clips along the top edge where the outer and inner enclosures meet. But on my lights the plastic has warped just enough that they do not really grab securely anymore.
I tried applying silicone adhesive yesterday and letting it set up overnight but was disappointed at how easily I broke the bond today. So I ended up pulling both outer enclosures off and giving them both a thorough cleaning on the mating edge, including gobs of the soft gooey stuff that came from the factory. It is mostly pushed out of the way now and not doing any good there.
If I had bothered to clean yesterday, I would probably be done already. But after cleaning everything off today I reapplied an adhesive that should hold and seal the two enclosures together.
Tomorrow will tell!
Thanks guys.

Yep, that did it. Once I had the bonding surfaces clean and free of goop and debris the adhesive got a good grip and is on strong. Thanks for the help!
