T5 TRANNY 2ND GEAR

Hey guys, I need some advice. I have a 87 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe (2.3L) and it has a World Class T5 tranny. I’m in the process of rebuilding the tranny and I need to replace 2nd gear. My 2nd gear has 31 teeth and has a part number 13-52-080-986 stamped on it. It also has another number stamped on it: C52113.

I’ve been searching online for this gear and I have found some 2nd gears with 31 teeth, but not with this exact part number. One of them is advertised as: “2nd gear, fits 85+ Ford Mustang V8 World Class T5 trans / 31T / 1352-080-152R”.

Another one I found is advertised as: “Mustang T5 World Class Transmission 2nd gear 31 Tooth, T1105-21R”.

And another one I found is advertised as: “T5 World Class 2nd gear (31 Tooth) Ford V6 99-01 & V8 1990-1995 (1352-080-152)(T1105-21R)”.

I also found a used one advertised as: “87-93 Ford Mustang 2nd Gear T5 Transmission 31 Tooth 2.3 Borg World Class OEM. This was pulled from an 048 gear cluster T5 transmission which was the 87-93 T5 Transmission used in all 2.3 4 cylinder cars. This gear is different from the V8 gear as this is specifically for the 048 cluster shaft.”

So I guess my question is will any of these 31 tooth gears fit my T5 gear cluster? Does it matter that the part numbers stamped on the gears are different? As long as it has 31 teeth will it work? Or is that not the case? The used one I listed (the last one) mentioned a "048 gear cluster." I assume that's the gear cluster I have since he mentioned the 048 cluster is used in all 2.3L 4 cylinders. But what about the other gears I listed? Although they're 31 tooth gears, will they fit a 048 gear cluster even though they don't list my 87 T-Bird as an application? I don't want to buy one of these gears just to find out it's the wrong one and won't work in my tranny.

Interesting you mentioned Mr. Cangialosi. I actually ran across a couple videos on Youtube of him and Eric the Car Guy rebuilding a T5. It was very informative and detailed and actually gave me the confidence to rebuild my T5, which I have never done before. I've got it all tore apart and ready to put it back together, but in need of a couple parts first. Thankfully, I found the gear I needed today. Once I get it, I'll watch their video to put it back together and pray I don't screw it up.

That was only part of my post. I was having a very hard time getting the photos to load, I'm going to try again now, so look for the post after this one.

1987 Turbo Coupe w/T5OD, 8.8 axle, grey smoke; most options. Got it in 1991 with 41K miles: 3 turbos, 2 heater cores, 3 T5OD full rebuilds, 6 clutches, 1 head gasket, 2 Teves II ABS units, etc. later....

Okay, let's see if we can get this to work now. From the beginning....

I’ve rebuilt my T5OD a few times, the last one was several years ago; I’ll dig around in the garage and see what part # is on my second gear, more on that in a minute.

First, here is some knowledge I’ll pass along to you about rebuilding that unit. I found this book to be a huge help in the rebuilding process:

I did some research online years ago for T5OD rebuilding instructions and found it, ordered it online. In the process of the rebuild I sent an email to Mr. Cangialosi and ended up actually speaking to him by phone about some questions I had with the procedure. He was very friendly and helpful—he suggested I consider this modification:

It says that the sturdier plate is not required for a standard rebuild...and, even though I’m not looking for racing or performance capabilities with my TC, I thought “What the hey, let’s do it, what can it hurt?” So I did, and no complaints—plus a certain feeling of peace of mind, that I have a key part that is actually more robust than I need.

(DISCLAIMER: Other than a couple of telephone calls and emails, and the purchase of this part, I have no professional or business relationship with Mr. Cangialosi. So let’s get that out of the way.)

I do highly recommend this book. It was very useful and informative.

Now, to your question. Here is a picture of my spare second gear:

Based on what you've said and my own experience, I would bet the last three numbers aren't all that important. For the last rebuild I purchased a 1989 Mustang T5OD, this could be from there—but I’m certain there is no difference between it and a Turbo Coupe. This one also has 31 teeth and the numbers stamped on it are very close to yours.

I can say I'm certain that there's no difference because--if I accidentally have the Mustang one in the car right now, it's running just fine.

I'd also highly recommend you purchase a professional rebuild kit, if you haven't already. Mine was about $229 if I recall correctly, and had all new bearings, clutch synchro springs, fiber rings, etc. My first rebuild I just re-used the existing parts. While it ran okay, the performance was MUCH better with the new parts. Also, I would recommend Dr Tranny Assemblee Goo, Blue Lube Gel. It was very highly recommended on just about every site I visited--as stated, it's a pre-assembly lube. And, Paul Cangialosi recommends Permatex Anaerobic Blue Gasket Maker for sealing together the various case assemblies, because it seals on contact--i.e. lack of air.

Please excuse me if you already are familiar with this kind of work and I am giving you a lot of suggestions you are already familiar with. I'd rather state the obvious than omit valuable information, that you did not know and could have used.
