Swapping auto to 5 speed parts list?

The circumstances:

1. My tranny is starting to slip a little and it also takes a few seconds for reverse to engage. The fluid is pretty dark and smells a little burnt. (93,000)

2. A friend of mine runs a junk yard and called me this weekend to say he took in a 88 5 speed car missing the hood and header panel that I could strip for parts..

Soooo.. I'm interested in converting my auto trans car to a 5 speed and I'm looking for the specific parts I should be concerned about getting off this salvage car.

Here's the list I came up with, please add to it as needed.

transmission w/ bellhousing
flywheel ?
crossmember
computer ?
pedals
shifter
driveshaft
cables from clutch pedal
clutch cylinder ?

I'll need to buy a clutch/pressure plate/TOB and I'll replace tranny fluid and u-joints as preventative maintenance...any other new stuff to buy?

He's also going to let me have the head and both manifolds as well as the drivers seat.. Everything for $100 to cover his guys labor to remove everything for me. Too good to pass that up [Image: smile.gif]

Anything else I should have them take off the car for the swap or any tips from those that have done this swap before??

Thanks~!

Of course you'll want the shifter boot and related stuff. On the clutch actuation mechanism.....it is completely hydraulic. The master cylinder is bolted through the seal that covers the steering column/firewall area. The resevoir is up near the ABS relays. THe slave cylinder is attached to the bellhousing.

Good luck, and good find! You getting the tranny, too?

I've not made this swap... <G>
As I understand it tho.. the automatic engines used a differenct cam than the standard... (I could be wrong)

Also there is no cable for the clutch on an 88.. it is hydraulic.. so you will need the pedal linkage as well as the master and slave cylinders.

Don't forget the console parts required (don't think it takes the WHOLE console) for the shifter, boot, etc.

Backup light switch?

Speedometer sending unit (whatever it is called)

Did the auto and std have different rear gear ratios? ( I think they did)

So you will need to do something concerning calibrating the speedo.

Wiring harness under the dash? There IS a clutch safety interlock on the standard cars. You can probably work around this with the original auto wiring harness.. but I would think that something tells the auto configured car that the trans is in park or neutral so the starter will engage. I would think you would need to "manage" that function somehow.

Just the quick thoughts that come to mind.

Yes.. tranny and all.. It's a complete car other than the hood, header panel and turbo. I can take whatever I want for the $100.

Are the lines from the clutch master cylinder to the slave cylinder metal tubing or rubber? (just wondering)

I'll be grabbing the shifter, boot, console plastic etc as well.

Good points on the nuetral safety switch etc.. I'll have to wire a toggle or something for that and call it a "kill switch" for insurance rebate [Image: smile.gif]

The rear end ratios are indeed different..3:73s in the auto car, but thats not a bad thing... If you use slightly oversized tires (either 255/60/16 or 235/65/16) the speedometer difference less than 1%.

Here's the reasoning..

3:55 ratio at 3000 rpm with stock 225/60/16 tires (diameter of 26.6) your speed is 66.9 mph

3:73 ratio at 3000 rpm with oversized tires of either 255/60 or 235/65 (diameter of 28.0) your speed is 67.0 mph

(this is based on both vehicles being in their 1:1 final drive ratio..not overdrive)

Thats close enough for me [Image: wink.gif] and it's just about time for new tires anyways..

I'm in the process myself , the switch for the clutch is attached to the pedal assembly which you'll need since the automatic one won't do .As for the tubing is rubber and hard plastic. And on a final note replace the rear seal on the tranny.Good luck .

Kevin,
You will want to see the car yourself during disassembly, it will make it so much easier to put your car back together. When getting your clutch don't forget you'll need a pilot bearing for the end of your crank. When you look at the donor car take carefull measurements of the shifter hole location, shape and size. There are also multiple layersof insulating panels under the shifter, and thankfully the floor pan has a bolt in section that you really should get for a clean install. I have all these parts from the 88 I parted out, not forsale but if you want to see any of the stuff for comparison let me know

Thanks Rick.. You know what the kicker in all this is? After going to Webbers and calling that guy in Chester (WAY overpriced on stuff as I asked about seats also) I couldn't find a front plate mount..so I ordered a new one. I had to pre-pay because it's a non stock item, and of course..the burgandy one I'm going to strip has a perfect one sitting right there on the front bumper. Oh well, I suppose for the break I'm getting on all this other stuff, I can live with the $31 for the bracket. [Image: smile.gif]
