strong sulfur smell after a drive-88TC

Firstly, I did search and came up with one result. Brian Larkin was the one having problems with his car. Anyway, after a long drive, I smell sulfur coming from the rear of the vehicle. My first thought was the rear brake pads may be to blame. Although, in Brians post, he mentions that the catalytic convertor is burning off excess gas(cause of a rich condition) creating a sulfur like smell. My car doesnt have any indications of running rich. The cat is new though. Is it possible that a new cat will cause this smell until its "broken in"?...or whatever you wanna call it.
Thanks for the help!

That smells like a bad cat. I've had bad cats on 2 cars (warranty) and they both smelled like rotten eggs. If it doesn't clear up after it's hot then it's probably bad.

id agree with Kieth about the first place to look is the CAT, but since it is new it almost rules it out. How new? and have you had any problems with the car since you had the CAT installed? running rich, burning oil and so on. Im pretty sure it is fiber glass type of material inside the cat, when I had a new exhuast put on it did let off a smell but not of sulfur.

do you have fresh gas in the car or has it been sitting for awhile?

and pull the codes.

I have no idea as to when the cat was installed. THe previous owner had it done, and it is definately new(it hangs down waaay too low, and is easy to see). Since the car has been in my posession, Ive run about two tanks through it. Would the octane of fuel have any impact? I am using 93 octane. Also, the car has no mufflers so that may make the exhaust easier to smell. IDK. Thanks!

Octane won't affect the cat. Running leaded gasoline might. I've always heard that the sulfer smell meant converter problems but never had any first hand experince. Lack of mufflers is not the problem.

well i was pointing in the direction of a bad smell coming from old gas is all. so the cat might not be new just clean from maybe some degreaser or something. replace the cat.
