Strange TPS

Working on a TC with strange TPS. Got the meter hooked up, made the preliminary idle adjustment and got 2000K?? Turn off engine and check initial tps setting. The meter is just bouncing all over the place and will not settle down. even when I'm not touching the car. OK put in brand new TPS and I get the same thing. Meter bounces from 0.001V to over 1.2 with no one touching anything.

Before tackling the TPS I pulled the codes
KOEO - 83

CM - 11

KOER - 17, 34 & 74
not sure what to make of the 17.

Car has high and fluctuating idle problems when driving.

I did make a weak attempt at cleaning the prongs in the connector.

Is this a ground problem and if so does anyone know which one. Or do I need new batteries in the meter (digital, screen easy to read)

sounds like you just have loose contacts, clean them and check again
Currently birdless, but will get another someday!

I'd agree with the bad connection to the meter. If the clean connections and new battery don't fix it, then I'd do the new digital meter. I got mine at Sears (big numbers for old tired eyes).

Since you are having idle issues, I'd say either the VREF feed or Sig return line feeding the TPS. Code 17 is "HARD IDLE SET (LOW)". Try running a ground wire to the battery and see if the AC fluctuation goes away. The BK/W ground wire splices in with all the other sensor grounds near the EGR solenoid valve.

Autopilot silly! Didn't you see the movie! It's an inflation valve thing. [Image: biggrin.gif]

with the eye sight going...is the valve still functional? do those little blue pills show up in the drug tests?

To rule out a bad DMM, use it to measure the voltage of a flashlight battery and see if it is steady.

I agree on a connector or ground problem. Disconnect connector from TPS. See if you get a stable VREF with respect to SIG RETURN at the connector. Move the harness around while doing this to look for a harness problem. If voltage is unstable between VREF and SIG RETURN, try between V REF and chassis ground. If stable now, there is a problem with SIG RETURN circuit. If voltage is unstable, there is a problem with VREF. Be aware that another sensor that is intermittantly shorting can cause VREF to drop out. Try disconnecting ECT, ACT, KS, etc (all sensors that use VREF) and see if VREF is stable. If it is, reconect sensors one at a time until VREF has a fit.

Might also want to pull the EEC and look for corrosion, pushed out pins, etc on the 60 pin connector.

Thanks for the responses all. I did what Jeff suggested first and checked out my meter and the test leads I use. The meter and it's batteries were OK. What I found was that 2 of the 4 leads I use were fubar. One failed the wiggle test and the other failed the push pull test. New leads have been made. The tps is in and adjusted and preliminarly appears to have solved the problem.I can't drive the car at the moment but will test further.
