Strange cold Idle

In the mornings when i start my car, it starts great, and runs great for about 5 mins, then (i assume) it switches to closed loop, and runs really rough. the car will die if i don't give it some gas during this time. However after about another 5 mins of letting it warm up, it runs great and doesn't miss or have any problems at all.
I'm at a loss at what could cause this? once i'm past that point the car runs great and no more misses and is very responsive.

Sorry pete, i know thats the first thing i shoulda done. Sadly this car has been sitting for a few months. I'll pull them this weekend and give em up here.
I know it has to be sensor related, like ECT or ACT, O2 or even the knock sensor maybe...
to top it off, i think i might be leaking oil

after more searching, it might be the infameous pip. I still haven't had time to pull the codes, but it seems like thats what it is.

pulled the codes. Code 14. it's the PIP.
Should i buy aa napa dist or a Motorcraft. considering that the motorcraft dist cost 3x as much as the napa one. I am not confident enough to rebuild it myself.

Several years ago I had problems with the TFI and intermittent PIP, not really that simple as it took a long time to solve. I replaced the distributor with a rebuilt NAPA unit which didn't solve the problem. I took that back for another rebuilt NAPA which wouldn't fit in the hole in the engine block until the distributor body was filed down. That one didn't work either. The new Ford distributor fit, worked, and has been trouble free ever since.

I usually recommend NAPA parts but I can't do so with their rebuilt distributors, alternators, and starters. My son's NAPA store uses a local rebuilder for starters and alternators.

DonH, that is an interesting story and very similar to an experience I had. I got a rebuilt from AZone.
I had to work the body of the distributor to get it in the block. Once I got it in, the car would not even start. Pulled it and checked it, dead PIP, brand new (allegedly). I took it back and of course they never heard of a bad one. Got a refund, went to NAPA andsince they could only get the type with the round, screw on rotor, I opted to send one of mine in for rebuild. It's been working fine for years.
Both distributors were rebuilt by A1 Cardon.

I pulled the dist off my second car. Popped it in, and it's been running great. No more cold idle problems.
I'll look into getting the old one rebuilt. or just buy a new one, i dunno. it's costly!

In my limited experience, the rebuilds are suppose?? to come with a new PIP but ask before you buy. You have to supply the TFI.
