Strange Code 42.

I been slowly going through the new white TC. I had it smogged and it past but just barely on the nox. So I started by cleaning the EGR and the IAC (also had some minor elevated idle issues at times). Then threw in a new set of plugs. I had wires and PCV on order. Found the PCV was bad. Had a new spare in the drawer so no problem there. Around this time I started getting a CEL. Pulled the KOEO & CM codes. KOEO GOT 11 and CM got a 42 - HEGO always sees rich. The CEL only seemed to come on at idle or when braking with the car in gear. Upon accelerating it would go out Sometimes it would come on during very low speed cruise. Since it seemed to happen most during periods of high vacuum, I suspected a diaphram leak in the FPR. Pulled the line to the FPR and only mild smell of gas, but enough to want to check further. Put a vacuum pump on it and took it to over 21". It held vac. just fine. Put a fuel pressure gauge on
it and got 40 psi reference and 45 unreferenced. Right on the upper limit per Ford specs. Moved on to the TPS and adjusted idle and checked base TPS. It was .995V. Little high for my liking so I knocked it down to .925V for a final value. This also brought the idle down from around 1200 to 1000 when warm. Took it out for a mild flogging [Image: biggrin.gif]. No CEL. I can tell that it's running rich, the KS is pulling a lot of timing and that stock exhaust sucks. Fuel pressure does go up 1 for 1 with boost, no problem, but 60 psi fuel pressure for 15 psi of boost on an IHI is too rich for my thinking. Got home and pulled the codes again - no code 42. I'm thinking of throwing on another stock FPR to see if I can bring the FP down 4-5 psi. Kind of want to get FP adjusted before I play without the KS.

Pete, I also had the same issue with the CEL getting 42 when I was slowing down or idling and it would go away shortly after I started moving again. Part of it was the TPS and another part was the FPR, reused old plugs, and a really bad PCV. The FPR was bad enough that the car was bucking and stuttering under any acceleration and it wouldn't cruise at all...

Actually mine ran pretty smooth. If it hadn't been for the CEL I would say nothing else was real noticable

Pete, is this an A4LD version? i wouldn't think you'd have one, but with your reference to the car being in gear, and with the symptom, i thought maybe you have an A4LD with stated EEC.

JT, Your right, I wouldn't want an A4LD. This one is a 5 speed.

Pete, the CEL/42 just led up to the FPR breaking enough to cause the bucking... I drove it around for a few days and it got progressively worse. Installing the Aeromotive fixed it for the most part.. Until that broke too LOL

Fair chance the CM 42 will go away with fuel pressure reduced to near stock levels.

Check your VAF output voltage at 1000 RPM hot idle and see if it is over 1 V. Too high a idle VAF voltage tells the EEC more air is flowing in than actually is, and the EEC adds fuel, but then hits the adaptive limit, and turns on the CEL at idle. If VAF voltage is high, You can open the air bleed in the VAF to lower VAF idle voltage.
