Strange 8.8 swap problem on 86 TC

I have done a the swap on my other 86 TC using a 87 manual TC 8.8 rear and swapped all my drum stuff for a fast 1/2 day swap.

Today I swapped another 87 TC rear on my newly acquired black 86 and ran into a problem. the drum back plate was at least 3/4 of an inch from the drum. It left about 1/4 inch from being inside the drum. I toomk a bunch of washers and shimmed it with about 1/2 inch worth of shims. It now cover the entire drum surface, but there is still a 1/4 inch gap between drum and back plate. Why? I didnt have this problem at all on my last swap.

I've read enough posts 8.8 rear swaps to wonder if not all 87-88 8.8 rears are consistent. You have two examples that don't appear to be so. It would be good of you to document this, in extreme detail. Measuring the width between the mounting plates on the housing, axle lengths, and so on would be useful. Lots of pics would be nice.
I think you have the best chance of explaining this since you have the two examples.

That's why it took 3 sets of axles to get it right when I did the swap years ago. This sounds oddly familiar... definitely should be documented in detail like Robert said.

I am thinking your most recent swap vehicle already had a fox mustang rear swapped into it previously. With a 25 year old vehicle there is no telling what has been done to it in the past. The TC and Mustang housings are the same width, with defferent axle lengths installed, thus the backing plates need to make up the axle length difference.
86TC Saved from certain death
88TC Gave its life so other TCs could live.

The axels are the exact same length. I pulled them out and stood them side by side and they are exact. Thats why I went ahead and shimmed the rear instead of just using the 86 axels. I'm wondering about the backplates. Maybe there is a difference in depth depending on when the 86 was built.

drums from an 83-84 tc that have the 3/4 raised center will fix your problem..
88tc (sold) but keeping an eye out.

But the question then is, why didn't he need them on the first conversion?

The 86 7.5s should all be the same between the backing plates as should the 87-88 (but not the same between the 86 and 87-88). That's what I would like to know.

As mentioned by Russ, maybe one of the four is an odd-ball replacement.

Anyone have a part number for these drums?

UPDATE: I replaced them with 84 drums and all was good.

Space between the 87 TC 8.8 rear backplate and 86 TC drum

My other findings
1)Axels in the 86 7.5 are the same length as axels in the 8.8. No matter which axle I pulled whether it be from my old 86, new 86, or 87 TC, they were all the same length.

2) The legnth of all three rear ends from end to end were the same roughly.

3)The difference I did find was that from one 87 TC rear to the other TC rear. The backplate brakets were a different distance apart. One was roughly 56" from bracket to bracket. The other was roughly 55" from bracket to bracket. In other words the postion/depth/placement of the brackets are different on some 87 and 88 TC rear ends.
