I have a steering or suspension problem in my 88. When I hit a bump driving down the road the car will either wonder either to the left of right. Usually it wonders to the side that the bump was on. Its kinda scary when It does it. Ive been told that it could either be the struts or the steering rack. Ideas? Thanks.

It could be either one or a combination of worn parts. Does the steering have a lot of play in it? If so it could be the rack. Does the car have a lot of bounce on the front driving down the road? If so it could be the struts. The ball joints or lower control arm bushings being worn out also might be a cause. Check the ball joints and control arm bushings for play. Check the ball joint wear indicators and visually inspect the control arm bushings. Bounce the front corner of the car with your body weight and see if it continues to bounce after you let it go. Usually no more than 2 decreasing bounces after you let it go. If more, the struts might be wore out. Have someone turn the wheel while the car is on the ground and you are looking at the tie rod ends on the rack. If you see excessive movement in the ends before it starts turning the tires then that would indicate a bad rack and or tie rod ends. Hope this helps....Tommy
