Starting problems

Okay here is the deal. Been away for a long time and now I am back. My TC is in the toilet right now so I have decided to help my nephew with his. He had some government work to do for the last 5 years and his 88 TC has sat for that duration.

Here is what I have tried, put in fresh fuel, new battery, cleaned plugs, and two new tires. When we tried to start the old gal, it hits a couple of times and then dies. I still have to run through the IRCM test and fuel pressure test. I went so far as to hook up my timing light to see if spark was getting to the plugs. They are getting juice, so the coil is firing. We still need to change the oil and filters. But is there anything that I am missing?

Thanks in advance.

Jim, if it's been sitting 5 years, I'm wondering how gummed up the injectors are?

Might also want to check/replace the fuel filter, it could be gummed up after sitting so long.

Pete and Joe, I was kinda thinking the same things. When I put gas in it, I also added about a half a gallon of laquor thinner (to 5 gallons of gas)2 to help with any vanish/gummed up things. Well, I mixed it with the gas in the can, then put it in the car.

I was concerned about the old gas because it was orange when I depressureized the rail at the schrader valve. I did that about 4-5 times last night until it cleared up just a bit.

I'd start at the back of the car. Disconnect the fuel line at the filter, jump the fuel pump connection at the EEC test plug and run it into a gas can til its clean. Then goto each connection you can from there doing the same thing. I had to do this on my SVO when I got it.

I am betting on gummed up injectors. I would pull the injectors and briefly "cycle" each using a 12 V battery to see if the click. If they dont, try a known good set if available or soak the originals in carb cleaner, etc for a few days.

Well, here is an update. We have figured out that the pump was not priming the system. So we started at the tank and pulled the pump. At first it did not want to work, then it turned right over. Then we did an ohms resistance check on the inertia switch, and that is where I don't get it. Either tripped or not, I am still getting infinite ohms. So I checked with the voltage and still got nothing between the two pink/black wires. So I then jumped the two wires skipping the inertia switch and still the pump does not run. Next we are going to start the diagnostics at the IRCM and see where it goes from there. Also, when I connect to the test block on the driver-side of the motor (where we pull codes from) and ground out the pump, nothing happens. Now this also happens on my TC but yet it still runs.

And as a side note; when the key is turned to the RUN position, the clock does not come on along with the dash lights. Any ideas on that one? He replaced one fuse under the dash that was blown, but it still does not work.

Okay, I will check back in later and post what else we find out.

Thanks in advance.

I forgot about the IRCM also. I had an intermittent problem on my 93 2.3 Mustang that finally got worse. I had to tap the IRCM to get it to prime. Ended up putting one in from the JY, no problems since. Also on my SVO when working on it I found mismatched injectors of aftermarket parts house and stockers. I put a good used set from a buddy in it.

And here is another update. Changed out the IRCM from my car and still no pump prime with the key in the RUN position. Pump runs when the key is in the START position only. Any ideas on where to go now?

Thanks in advance.

And here is yet another update. We changed the ECM and still nothing. I have a feeling that it might have something to do with ignition switch. But if there is anything else that can be either changed or tested, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.
