Starter Problems

Just want to verify a problem. The starter on #2 bird spins when I hit the key but the drive gear is not engaging the flywheel. I assume it's new starter time?? Feedback please. It was working fine an hour ago.

Pete, you may just need to get a new Bendix installed. I'd take it somewhere and have the Brushes and Bearing checked while your at it. Some places can do that kind of work, while most just exchange.

You can put a new bedix in it as well as new brushes. By then you will be close in price to a rebuilt starter. Depending on how good a rebuilt one you get.
How old is the starter? If it is not to old you can repair it and have good results. If it is old or is original then it is time for a new one. I will not bother to repair a starter or alternator. My time is worth more then that to me. I would rather spend it on projects that are more interesting.

i agree. If you are going to spend the time to remove the starter, you might as well just replace it.

And if you do, go with a Ford unit. Otherwise, you will probably be doing it again, soon.

Pete, if you take the cover off the top of the starter you can see that there is an pivot arm that is held by a pin that actuates the starter gear. This pin can work its way out and the arm will be hanging loose...and thus won't engage the starter gear. It's worth a quick look.

Thank you all for the responses. I should have added that this is a reman unit w/ less than 3K on it since installation in March. Given the way it went down, I'm inclined to go with Dan's idea. I'll pull it off tomorrow and take a look. There is a warrenty on it so I can always exchange it.
