My starter has been acting up lately. Starts to crank and before it catches I just hear the starter spin…but starts on the next key turn.
Yesterday it went click on the first key turn, then on the second key turn it started but had a bit of a grinding sound.
I put it up on ramps when I got home figuring it's time to pull the starter.
QUESTION…is it best to change the starter and solenoid or just the solenoid? After I get it off the car is there a good way to tell if the only problem is the solenoid?

Solenoid is on the driver side inner fender near the battery, not on the starter. Test the starter with a set of cables, grond to the body of starter and hot to the terminal.it should come out as if it was engaging the flywheel and spin with no grinding. Hold on to it as it will jump around, best to put it a vise or on the ground with your foot on it.

When the starter is out, have someone rotate the engine by hand and carefully inspect the teeth on the ring gear for damage.

got it all done and was pretty simple. Inspected the teeth and everything looked good. Starts fine and dandy again 
BTW My daughter (born in 1988) had to borrow my car for a few days and I almost didn't get it back she liked it so much! She said it sucks at night, but was FUN during the daytime
