Squeaking noise in dash

lately within the last few months when i hit bumps in the road, or normal driving i hear this squeak in the dash. Sometimes it might be a sort of knock too. Defintely coming from the dash and not the engine compartment. Is it loose? Is there some way I can tighten it?

There's a lot of "stuff" under the dash that can result in a squeak or knock. The main dash mounting bolts are under the dash speaker grills, the little center dash grill, on the sides under the kick panels. The center dash has at least one mounting bolt on the upright frame, under the left side console extension. I don't know if there's supposed to be one on the right side. There are also numerous other items under the dash that can squeak, control units (cruise, overboost chime, low fuel relay,...), the trim pieces can get loose, move and squeak. You just have to start investigating and if it really bothers you, it might be necessary to remove trim and other stuff to check it out.
I've got a squeak that I'm trying to find and it's no fun.
One last thing, I don't know if the '88 has an outside trim plate at the bottom of the front window, but that can also cause noise if loose (at least in the '86.)

Yeah. I've got squeaks too. It is a common disease. I will check the outside windshield trim plate Robert. Thanks for the tip! (assuming the 88 has it).

yea it really bothers me. I think its the OCD haha.

i will do that though, luckily spring break is just around the corner and i will have the time to maticulously take it apart and attempt to fix it.

I know my dad took the dash out of his 86 Lincoln Mark VII (T-Bird in disguise) so hopefully he can help me.

thanks

Something I have done for years is put a dab of Black RTV Silicone on the screws and small bolts when I re-assemble the dash etc. One of the consequences of having lived in the North, and driving over my share of Gravel roads, is rattles and squeaks. My first major overhaul as a "Kid" was my 73 Mustang rag Top. (wish I had it now!) when I did the engine rebuild, while the engine was out, I did a serious cleaing under the hood, and all the small and misc screws etc I dabbed a small bit of Silicone on them to act as a Thread locker as well as an isulator and sealer. Of course, not on any connection that was GROUND related! IT worked very well, so well that I carried it over to under the dash as well. This has no doubt stopped many a squeak and rattle over the years for me. THe only thing I will add is that you do not need much, and to keep a good supply of paper towel around to keep cleaning up as you go. That stuff can get into the most tough to clean off places!
