The speedometer on my 85 turbo coupe works most of the time. But sometimes it will be at 60 (or whatever), then go to 0, then kindor flicks some near 0, then may pop back up to 60. I have the computer clock with mpg, trip, etc. Also when the cruise control is set at 60 (or whatever), and if the speedometer goes to 0, the cruise control quits functioning. Does this problem sound familiar to anyone? thanks for any replys.

VSS problem. Either the VSS itself is going bad, the driven gear on the VSS is nearly stripped, or there is a wiring problem with the VSS.... like an intermittant in its electrical connector.

not much else to add, other than to agree it's the VSS

when they start to go, sometimes they are boned by heat soak, so it starts out fine then once the trans is up to temp, your speedo will be jumpy

like anything else, it will only get worse until it's completely dead, then you have no speedo OR odometer

if the cruise control WASN'T affected, it could have been a problem with the speedo itself

when you get a replacement from Ford (don't bother with aftermarket or junkyard if you're keeping the car), keep the speedo gear as well as the speedo cable blanking cover from your old sensor, as these usually do not come with the replacement sensor
www.fordpartsonline.com has them for a discount

Got the VSS put in today, and everything works perfect now, both speedometer and cruise control. I went for a test drive tonight, and everything works great, THANKS.
