Hi all!
Does anyone have anykind of "Specialty" insurance on our cars, I got hit by a Ford Expedition on vacation, I was going to Cape Cod for a car show and a vacay, He drove into my left rear 1/4, and the damage is $1500.00 that is a total for our cars, value is only $1200.00. My car is mint, Any help would be appreciated, thanx!

Bill, below is what I wrote to someone else in your situations. It may help in dealing with your current insrurance company. Also talk to Jeff G. He has "stated value" insurance but there are driving restrictions.

----------------
"The insurance company is going to low ball you initially no matter what.

First, here is a couple places where you can get some idea of what the market considers the value. Keep in mind
these are only guides. http://www.cars.com/carsapp/national/?szc=44001&srv=parser&act=display&tf=/index- default.tmpl

and
http://www.kelleybluebook.com/

and
http://www.alldata.tsb.com/

Find out what it's worth.

Be prepared to argue like "H" with the insurance people. It may take some time, be persistent. Other things that can
help are if the car is low miles or exceptionally good shape (pictures). One more thing that can help is if you can show
you have spent money to either maintain or improve it (new paint, rebuilt engine whatever). Gather up those receipts.

Now if you want to keep the car and restore it, get the insurance company to come up in price as much as you think
you can, and after that, tell them you will accept a reduced payment, but you want to keep the car. Most insurance
companies will go along with this. How it plays out may vary from state to state. I can't say how much less they will
pay you if you want to keep the car. You may have to retitle the car and get a "salvage" title, but that is just paper
work if you plan to keep the car. I did this on a car that was "totalled' after a body guy told me he wanted it and
would more than cover the difference. The insurance company paid me more than what I was trying to sell the car for,
even at the reduced rate and the guy that wanted to buy it made up the difference. Granted I lucked out, but other
people at our site have taken reduced payments and ept cars that the insurance companies wanted to total."
--------------------------------

Hope this help. Argue like hell!

Thanks so much Pete for your reply, the car doesn't have low miles on it but it is in mint shape(I took 2nd at Carlisle this year) and does get driven 4-6K a year. I have my beat up 88 that I use for a daily driver, why couldn't that one get hit? I could use the extra money, lol.

Thanx again, I'll let you know what
happens.

Bill, I am really sorry to hear this !

It makes me sick. I told the guy to just scare you...not hit you. j/k LOL !

I'm afraid I would have been tempted to grab my "great equalizer" out of the back seat and inflict "total" damage on the guy's face (I could always claim he hit the windshield in the accident...especially after slamming his face in to it !).

Good luck though...and, like Pete said, argue like hell with the insurance company.

Maybe Pete or I could give you an "expert" appraised value letter signed by a NATO officer ????

Thanks guys for the support, the "nice" guy that hit me is now claiming I slammed on my brakes and slid into him. So much for being a nice guy, Dan, can I borrow that "EQUALIZER" for a while?

Jeff,do you mind me asking what is the name of that insurance company? One of the guys at work gave me a name of a guy he uses for his Nova, but I may as well check around.
Thanks so much guys.
