ive had a big sterio in my old tc and new one and never had a problem. i wired up a new deck the exact same way and now there is alot of distortion from the incar speakers especialy when the bass hits. the strange thing is its only when the car is running, when its not it sounds great. anyone else have a similar problem or have anyideas what it might be?

Sounds like it isn't being regulated properly or something when there's more juice being pushed through it. But don't quote me on that, I don't know what I'm talking about. Just a quick thought. lol

i forgot to mention that i have the stock eq and amps still hooked up and in use. i did that by splicing one of the 12volt power wires and hooking it up to one of the wires onthe stock harness.....dont rember which one. but i had this setup for 2 years in my old car with no problems. it worked fine in this car untill i installed a new deck. i doubt its the deck ethier beacuse the voulume knob broke and i got a new unit while it was under warrenty

I don't know how you have the amp connected, is it RCA plugs, or speaker wires feeding the amp?
Usually distortion is a lack of power, hence the crapping out when the bass or heavy current draw kicks in.
I always overpower(exaguration of the word) my speakers. In other words feed 50watt speakers with at least a 100 watt amp, rather than vice/versa.
As Ryan suggested try running just from the deck.
It could be the signal from the deck is too high for the stock amps, if you are using speaker wire for feeds?

Most likely the problem. Everything I've read leads me to the belief that the stock amp doesn't play well with aftermarket heads.

The stock amp is a POS..... puts out something like a whole 4W peak per channel....a whopping 16W peak total. I dont even think you can buy a bargin basement head unit that puts out LESS than 16W peak these days.

Ditch the stock amp...and the EQ. You're probably putting in too hot a signal (i.e. speaker level signals) and the amp is clipping. Like Jeff K sez, it's a POS anyway, lots of distortion and not a lot of power....would make a better guitar foot pedal or something. [Image: smile.gif]

Haven't pitched the factory stereo on this car yet, but on my '85, I just hacked the ends off of the factory amp (two pigtails, one input + power, one output) and then wired up each speaker output to the corresponding head unit input...then you can plug that straight back into the factory wiring harness without hacking that up. Probably the cleanest solution...and if you aren't planning on putting a competition system in the car, it's plenty good. The factory amp only drives the rear speakers, there is no external amp for the front speakers. You may be able to keep the EQ, but I'm planning on ditching that as well, as I'm sure it'll make the system sound worse.
