Some help identifying this part/sensor please?

I finally found my coolant leak, but I don't know what this sensor is that its leaking from.

It is located right under the exhaust manifold between cyls 1 and 2. It has a push on connector.

Of course I assume it is the coolant temp. sender for the gauge, but I searched and found a pic of sensor locations, and the 2 coolant temp sensors are near the intake mani?

Can someone help? Thanks!

There is no factory sensor under the ex man between cyls 1 and 2. However, that is the place that a freeze plug bolck heater is installed, either factory or aftermarket. Is it about 2 inches in diameter? Id so, it is a block heater.

Ah yes, thanks a ton Jeff! It has to be the block heater. Knowing that, I probably could have followed the wires to the plug, doh!

I wonder how I would remove it. Does the whole thing screw out? Since it is leaking, I guess I could just cap it off? I miss driving the bird, my cavalier just isn't the same.

So my question now is how to remove the block heater. Anyone know?

Thanks!

Ok I think I fixed the leak. There was a small bolt that came loose on the bottom part of the block heater connector.

I screwed a new bolt in to seal it.

I still couldn't figure out how to get the block heater out though........

Block heater fits in pretty much like a regular freeze plug.... more or less just an interference fit. They have an O ring that seals in the hole, and the screw in the center operates some expanding fingers inside the water jacket that holds it in place. To remove it, loosen up the screw / nut in the center, and then pry it out.

Cool I really appreciate the help. Well, I am thinking that those expanding fingers have broken off inside of the water jacket.

The bolt was just hanging there, and it looked nicked up. I hope the screw i put in there will stop the coolant from leaking.

xcrunnerbd: both my birds have factory block heaters and neither one works, so dont be too jealous lol.

Thanks again for the help!
