single exaust on a TC???

Well, after some research i have found that tc's came with dual exhaust from the factory. This is odd to me since mine has SINGLE!! i guess the previous owner did this for economical reasons. well is there anything i can do with the exhaust untill i get the stinger 3" to 2.5" duals in a couple of months?
Another thing, i see alot of you are getting in the mid to high 20's for gas mileage, i am only getting like 19-20 and thats highway. now i did have my A/F ratio gauge hooked up and it was reading in the stoiciometric range. Could the TPS or something of that nature be causing this??
Finally, i have a rattling noise when i am slowing down in gear, almost sounds like the cat shield but not sure, seams to be tight.

Well, i think it is official, i am TC obsessed, i cant stay off this site...

Welcome to the obsession zone Big Grin
If you are going to get a new exhaust shortly, live with what you got and put the money else where.

Has the car had a recent tuneup with the "right" parts. Tuneup can significantly affect mileage. Be sure to check the ignition timing, spout out.

If the pipe looks stock then it was an automatic originally. They came with single exhaust. I forget the vin identifier..but you're going to do duals so it don't matter. Someone saved you the trouble I went through to get rid of the A4LD. Big Grin

I did do a tune up, i believe i used the 8 mm autolite professional series wires and autolite paltinum plugs. i believe the cap and rotor is a blue point (or blue streak) and have the brass inserts. PCV new, K&N CA, cleaned IAC and EGR, flushed radiator, new t-stat. Would these parts be considered correct? sorry for my ignorance but what does "spout out mean" I see it alot and dont quiet understand? Now i was considering setting my timing 12 deg advance and disconnecting the KS. Now detonation can be best described as a pinging noise correct? Oh, i also run Amoco 93, ethanol free, if that makes a difference? As for the exhaust can i eliminate the tailpipe? Would that help?

This is an original 5 speed car, i am the 3rd owner, currently 101,000 miles on it. it has been garage kept since 1994.

I'd give a good look to that single exhaust system. I was pissed off at first that I had a single exhaust until I looked real close at it.

Turns out I ended up with a real nice exhaust system. 2.75" DP, and a 2.5" mandrel bent cat back. Not quite mandrel bent DP, but smooth bends with barely any loss to diameter.

Nothing at all close to Stinger's full 3" exhaust, but nothing to laugh at.

Maybe you, too have an upgrade.

thats hopefull thinking but i dont think so. The lady that owned it was in her 60's, had a bum clutch knee and needed to sell. I dont really think she gave a rat A$$ about performance. Any advice on a quick remedy?

These cars are very pickey about their ignition system parts. Ive had bad experiences with autolite professional series wires on both my TCs. I even ohmed them out thinking I had a bad wire or two, but... they appeared fine. My 2 year old set of motorcraft wires are still doing just fine. The platinum plugs arent going to help things at all either. Just thought that should be mentioned.

As far as the rattle, I thought that it was a stretched out timing belt hitting the cover, but i was wrong. I still cannot fuiger it out. Mine rattles around 23-2500 rpms while accelerating and while slowing down in gear. it also does this while free revving in neutral. No Idea what it is at this point.

The exaust, leave it. Stingers 3" setup is very nice. My blue 87 has this on it, and i like it a lot. I doubt your gas milage has anything to do with your exhaust, short of having a plugged cat.

The spout plug is the little pigtail that comes off of the same harness as the TFI plug does. The spout is a small plug that fits in the end of this connector.

Quick remedy? Not really. Try one thing at a time, and test the milage. thats the best route.
All hail Project "Marauder" !

Eliminating the tail pipe will help - asphyxiate you. I would just leave it alone and swap out when the time comes.

It sounds like you got the right parts. Some have problems with platinums, some don't.

The spout is a little square device that hangs from two yellow wires in the wiring harness going to the TFI module on the distributor. It has a removable plug in the end. You remove the plug to set the base timing and then replace the plug so the EEC can control timing.
The picture is what it looks like but that one is actually in an F-150.

If it's a factory stick car, then on the door jamb (driver's side) there's a sticker. Under axle it will say "K". That means 3.55's, and a factory 5-Speed. If it's anything else you have a converted auto car.
