Showdown at the Fairground Tuscon Int Raceway

Well.. my 20 year old son felt froggy and leaped...
He drives a 90 Acura Integra. 1.8L 4 cyl 5Spd. Stock with the exception of a K&N and a induction tube.

He challenged his old man and my 88 TC (stock but have a boost controller in and a K&N on the way) to a 1/4 Family Feud!


So... already spoke with Pete...

I'm going to try and squeeze about 17lbs of boost out of the old bird (has a fresh head and gasket on it)and use Pete's cold air induction setup that is shown on this web site.

Any of you regular bird racers got any tips for me on how to slip the boat from the mooring and get it rolling?

Tire pressures?
Launch RPMs?
Shift Points?

On the Stock motor with 17lbs or so what are you running on the timing?

Open to any and all tips!

I think your best bet would be to go out and practice some launches. What tires do you run? If you want some more power try unhooking the exhaust before the Cat, if you do this expect to have more boost! Do you have fresh tuneup on the car? Also try closing the gap on the plugs a little, try running .030. Try to get the fuel level down to a 1/4 tank add some tolulene or a couple gallons of race gas and turn the timing up a few degrees.

The car has stock 225-60 HR16s on it.
Nothing fancy. I suppose you are running slicks on yours?

I was wondering what would happen if I opened up the exhaust. Fortunately this car is very rust free.. underneath looks damn near brand new. However, trying to remember.. isn't the cat and the downpipe all one piece? Then it bolts behind that?

Where do you scare up he racing gas?

Oh and Sctr.. weren't you looking for a T-5 for a TC awhile back? Tried to send you an email and it bounced. My buddy down this end has an .. hmm.. 85 I think parts car... Doesn't run, but has the motor, etc all there. 5Spd tranny in it.

Hi. I was running some firestone 225 60 16s. I cant remember what the exhaust is like on the TC either. You can always disconnect it from the turbo, this will help alot! I forgot to update my e:mail address its [email protected]. Do you know if it was an early 85 or a late 85? Also how much does he want for it?
O yea is this the car from UTAH? The one that my friend and you were bidding over?
You should be able to get the fuel at teh track.

There are two bolts holding together the flange between the back of the cat and the y-pipe that leads to the mufflers that you can disconnect. Just be sure to bolt it back up when you're all done to avoid hearing that terrible droning noise from inside the car while cruising down the highway.

Also try unplugging the ride control actuators on the front shocks and then flipping the switch to firm. This'll help with weight transfer and, combined with the right clutch engagement technique, should net you some very low 60' times.

As far as launching goes, I'd try and get in some trial runs before the big match-up to get everythign dialed in just right. I usually bring the rpm's up to around 3000, let the clutch out about half way on the 3rd yellow, then slowly let it out completely within the first 30 ft or so. This should prevent any unnecessary wheelspin but also let you build enough boost to avoid stalling the car. The small ihi is pretty much out of steam by a little over 5000rpm, so that's usually where i shift. I'd also suggest shifting into 4th gear about 200ft before the traps even though you could probably just ride out 3rd.

With a k&n direct on the vam, 18lbs of boost, disconnected knock sensor, unbolted exhaust, and the car's weight at 3480lbs, i managed a 15.1 @ 89mph with a 2.05 60' time. Even if you can only manage some mid 15 second runs, I still think you can beat that foreign sardine can. Good luck.

I was sure I could drop the exhaust behind the cat but Shawn was talking like before the cat. If memory serves.. the downpipe and cat are one piece on my car.

I cnat remember for sure. I think you do have to disconnect it behind the cat. My car had a different cat so I could pull it off befor. I think you should geet some pretty good times.
