May be totally off here, but the way it sounds, it could be that somebody put gear oil in the transmission instead of ATF.... Just a thought, you said you checked the fluid... what kind of fluid was it?

[Edit: oops, just reread this thread and noticed it had already been mentioned, sorry]

Yes, I've actually changed the fluid twice, because it indeed did have gear oil in it. I changed it the first time with cheap Super Tech ATF and it made the gears quiet down a bit, then changed it again a few hundred miles later with Mobil 1. It got a little smoother and quieter, but the tranny still needs to be replaced. This isn't even worth rebuilding in my opinion because JY Mustang T-5's are so abundant in my area.

Ryan,
Beware, the 5.0 Mustang uses a different trans than our cars, find one from a 4- banger Mustang.
Just my 2 cents worth.

Ryan, few years back I was having shifting problems and Jeff K. recommended that I try changing the fluid PLUS adding in a 4 oz. bottle of Friction Modifier. Took care of the problem and that's been two years or more. Seems to be common practice with alot of racers and gearheads. Give it a try.

No offense, but the 5.0 5 speed's only difference from the 4 speed is the pilot bearing -- you can either do a bit of machine work on the 4 speed pilot bearing (I believe it's the one with the smaller hole), or you can change input shafts -- I've even read that the 4 cyl 5 speed input shaft is STRONGER than the v8's -- dunno if that's true or not, hopefully somebody will speak up and set us both straight Smile

our cars transmissions have alot lower 1st gear than the 5.0, to get the big car with the 4 cyl. going from a stop. I have heard that 5th is a different ratio also.

He was referring to that it bolts right in with the exception of the pilot bushing. I have a 5.0 T5 in my '88 TC with 4.10 gears.
