Shifter Linkage/ Detent Problem

Okay fellas, usually the search feature answers any questions I have but this one seems to be a new one.

Something went whacko with the detents inside my A4LD. It jammed in drive, and when I tried to put it in park things got even more messed up. Eventually i messed with it enough that I broke the shifter cable. Now I need to replace that, but I obviously need to fix the original problem first.

I can get the tranny in park by putting a wrench on the linkage and moving it. It doesn't move easy though. Once I have it in park I can start the car, and get it into drive the same way. I can't seem to get reverse though, and things just aren't right. I pulled the pan off expecting the problem to be obvious, but it isn't. I don't know what it's supposed to look like inside so I can't tell what is messed up. Is there a manual that shows how the linkage and everything under the pan should go?

Hey Gearjammer,
The shift cable may be the beginning and only problem, it may heve just worn out and caused hard shifting till it broke. Check your grounds to the engine too, I have seen times where the engine ground was bad, and the shifter cable acted as a ground cable and melted, it was on older cars than ours, but just a guess.

I definately do need a shifter cable. I haven't even had time to check and see if I can get one locally at a dealer or something yet.

The thing was shifting fine before it went. I drove it out to the store to get some stuff, and when I got back in it was hard to get out of park. It went into drive okay, I drove home, and it wouldn't go back into park. Naturally, I couldn't start the bastard either.

I got it into park by putting a wrench on the shifter cable nut and moving it, while my old lady sat inside and moved the shifter. I got it started, tried pulling it into drive, and the cable snapped.

Like I said, I can move the linkage with a wrench just fine. It makes nice positive clicks and everything, but I tried it with the car running, chained to a hoist, and it didn't seem to ever go into reverse.

I'd really like to do the five speed swap, but I just don't have the time to source all the parts.

Aye Carumba! That'd be perfect... I am loaded for a monday morning delivery about 40 miles from you in Hagerstown, MD. How far off of 81 are you, and can I get to where it's at in an 18 wheeler?

I am less than 2 miles from 81. Exit 310. I live on a cauldesac(sp). But I could meet you somewhere with the parts if thats too tight. Im one exit south of Winchester (exit 313). Let me know what is easiest for you.

Yeah, I am reloading paverstones in Hagerstown so I'd be loaded pretty heavy. Do you know of a place nearby that trucks can get into?

Truck stop? There are several truck stops at exit 313. There are also a lot of large parking lots. Walmart, Delco Plaza.
