SHAKY TBIRD! AHH!

I just made a six hour trip in my 88 TC and the high speed vibration (which developed right before my trip) nearly drove me nuts! It was odd, however, as the vibration/noise would quite as soon as I took my foot of the gas and did not push in the clutch. If I was under load, cruising, or idling, the vibration was crazy; if I was coasting while in gear perfection. Of course the vibration got worse the faster I went.

I have new tires out back and freshly balanced ones up front, all with good pressure, so I've pretty well eliminated those as the culprit. I'm suspecting a few things (like an unbalanced drive shaft), but wanted to see what everyone here had to say.

Is there a chance it could be a mount of some sort? My exhaust is turned down after the muffler (right under the rear seat) and hung with plumber's strap, could that be it? There's so much to ponder!

if your u-joints are good then definitly have the d/s rebalanced,it appears it's a real common problem with these cars.

Make sure the DS bolts in the rear are tight.

I wondered about the u joints as well. Everyone once in a while there is a pop from what sounds like the driveline, but because it was only everyonce in a while I presumed it was my exhaust bouncing around. I'll get a look at it and let ya know.

I suspected the u joints as well. Every once in a while I hear a pop which sounds like it might be coming from the driveline, but because it is intermittent I thought it was probably my exhaust bouncing around. I'll take a look and let you guys know.

Where do you think the viberation is coming from? I know my crossmember has gone bad which I think that explains why my car makes a clunk noise when I let on and off the gas and while taking off. I replaced my u joints and it didnt help. My viberation sounds like its coming from the shifter though. eeek.

The popping sounds like its coming from the back, so I'm going to check out that rear u-joint. *fingers crossed*

I'm with Pete, and I give another vote to Drive Shaft Bolts. Easy to check, and easy to fix. 12 point 12mm I believe. I've had 2 tbirds that have had their drive shaft bolts come loose. Shaky under throttle, smooth while coasting were the symptoms. Sound familiar?

...and the winner is: REAR U-JOINT! Bolts were tight, drive shaft must have been balanced. There was a considerable amount of lateral play in the spider at its junction with the flange. While I was at it, I replaced the rear shaft transmission seal. Those are a bugger to get out, what with the cat being in the way. I sure demolished the old seal getting it out!

Thanks, everyone, for all of your suggestions. Let me know if I can ever help you!
