The ball park checking can be done from the compressor end. A dial indicator would be nice. For the T-3, end play should not exceed 0.003" and side play sould be between 0.003 and 0.006" according to one book I have. I haven't seen specs for the IHI but would think they would be similar. You also want to look at the condition of the compressor wheel blades. Are the ends badly eroded, chipped or broken off.

Where can i find one of these "dial indicators" you speak of Pete? I noticed the T3 from the JY i got has the slightesed amount of play if i hold onto and end and move nudge it to the top and bottom of the housing. How can i tell if this is to mush just with my hand? Can i ?
Thanx

You can get them lots of places. Try Harbor Freight for an inexpensive set up including magnetic base. It will only be good for checking end play at that position.
A sheet of 24 # printer paper is about 0.005" thick.
