Setting timing for ignorant newbs 101

Okay, I've reviewed the faq on turbotbird regarding setting timing, and I just want to make sure I'm doing this right. I checked my timing today.

Then car was warm and SPOUT plugged in. There appears to be a TD in the timing cover. My white mark on the crank pully was about 4 or 5 notches to the left of the TD mark. I would assume this is 20*, no?

If I'm on or off, please let me know as this car is stumping me and I'm not one to go throwing parts at it to fix it.

Thanks,
Chris

Take the sprout out to set base timing. Don't try to short cut the process by doing it with the sprout in. Yes, you want to use the notches to the left of the TD mark, if you standing in front of the car. Each notch is 2* and you want to set base timing at 10-12*

I find it helpful to paint the notch on the crank white and also the 10* notch

Remeber put the sprout back in when finished.

Awesome, Pete. So, I checked it today and when hot it was running at 4 or 5 notches to the left. So, either my spout is disconnected or or my timing is WAY retarded. Perhaps this is my problem, because this car is slow with a capital S, and it shouldn't be with a gillis and exhaust and 18 psi.

Pete, I really appreciate the time you've spent to educate me in the fine art of Turbo ford.

Chris

Let me just tell you, I was beginning to think each and every one of you was nuts for driving and raving about these turbo Fords. In the back of my mind I was saying, "these are decent cars, but not that exciting".

Well, after setting the timing correctly, this thing gets moving like a scalded dog! Holy smokes! It totally transformed the car.

Pete, you're my personal hero. I appreciate your help.

Also, much thanks to those who've helped me along thus far.

I'll try to get some pics up of the big bird when I get a chance to shrink them down.

Thanks,
Chris

cbpldc, could you change your signature? Looks like it does not apply. Get a K&N and a Gillis and you will go into shock. I did.

I actually have a gillis installed, and a K&N, fender mounted. Also have a custom dual 2.25 cat back exhaust.

Woohoo! Where I once thought the brakes were fantastic, they are now merely adequate.
