How hard were you driving the car at the time? It could be the head gasket.
NO TC and NO headaches.

My guess would be jumped timing, but I am by no means an expert. My only experience with a jumped timing belt was with an 86 Escort, and it produced the effects you described. I was so sure that I took it to a shop and asked them to replace the head gasket. I positively absolutely knew the head gasket was shot, (since it acted just like the MGB I used to have that ran through gaskets like candy,) and I also knew it would take forever to fix, so I went out and bought a nice 86 TC for $500. Later, he said the gasket was good but they replaced it anyway, and that after replacing the timing belt it runs good for an Escort.

So, if you line up the timing mark on the TDC mark, is the camshaft pointer on the mark? If not, rotate the crank another 360 degrees. Is the camshaft pointer on the mark now?

We tore down the 25da owners bird over the weekend and found the #2 piston to be broken! The outside portion of the piston is totally gone, big ole hole. Anyone ever hear or experience this type of engine blow up? What would cause it? Any reply would be appreciated.

Thanks

Pistons break from detonation, which can be caused by running hot and/or running lean. Was it overheating? How is the fuel system? pump weak? bad regulator? plugged filter? dirty injector not flowing enough fuel?

Re-built motor using K-B Hyper pistons?
Were the edges of the broken area of the piston "cleanly" broken, or melted? Either way it sounds like a detno problem.

That's almost identical to mine when I bought it. Number 3 piston and cylider wall trashed. Thought it was the head gasket also. My first TC and I start the experience with a complete overhaul.
fun...fun...fun (note the sarcasm?)

FOR SALE

Because we have a race car that takes up most of our free time, we don't have the time to put in the bird. I will not junk the car, it is great shape except for the motor. 5 speed tranny is good, clutch is new, it was fun to drive.

Anyone interested in a project car? Best offer I get and its yours! I can take pics for you to see if you want, just let me know what you want pictured. Contact via email to start and lets see if we can't get another bird back on the road.
