So I changed both the BP and O2 sensor. They were old, the O2 was in poor shape so I think I made the right call there. In the end I dremeled the top of the sensor off, put a breaker bar on it and that was that.

The whole thing that started this quest was the issue with the car not idling properly. Driving around town, frequently you stop and it idles way above 1500rpm, sometimes 2500rpm. On occasion, it would idle at around 1000, but whenever it tried to do that it would choke/cough and threaten to stall. Always it would bring the CEL on. It's like it tries to drop to proper idle but leans out and then catches itself, sometimes though it doesn't.

Driving it today after the change, I noticed it idles at about 1000rpm far more frequently and with less erraticness. But it still brings on the CEL light, and every now and again won't come down below about 2000rpm when stopped. At 1000RPM its definitely a bit rougher running than higher up. Not really sure where to look on this one. Advice muchly appreciated!!

Not sure what the BP sensor is, but have you done a TPS adjustment and a IAC clean? Usually the IAC is pretty gunked up on any Ford, especially from the late 80s

What code is stored in the CM part of the KOEO test?

Havent attempted a TPS adjustment yet or cleaned the IAC.. I'm looking fir instructions on the latter and what to use to clean it and if any gaskets etc are needed. Ill bet thats a chunk of the problem also.

Take the IAC off and then take the solenoid off. Spray it out good with carb or brake cleaner. May have to soak it a few times. If you need a new gasket, just make one out of a cereal box or beer carton.

Can't get the solenoid off I think without drilling the screws. Theyre totally frozen in there and the heads are disintegrating with each attempt with the srewdriver. Is it essential to pull the solenoid off or can I work with it as is?

If the CEL was on for more than a few seconds, there will be a code stored in the continuous memory (CM) part of the KOEO self test. Get the code and report back.

I've had good luck clamping a small pair of Vice-Grips on the screw heads and breaking them loose...

Codes were 27 and 41 .. the third code is gone now.

Don't worry about the 27 for now. The 41 means the O2 is reporting a lean air/fuel ratio that the long term fuel trim can't correct for under some conditions. Common causes are vacuum leaks, VAM out of calibration, low fuel pressure, or possible exhaust leak before the O2 sensor. This code does not mean the O2 sensor is bad.
