Jim, Have you checked fuel pressure under boost?

According to my electric fuel pressure gauge, it rises pound for pound with boost.

Oh, and my boost is set at 13#at WOT.

It still just feels like the world is tied to the rear bumper.

The car is going to have to sit for the next few days more, there is too much snow and ice around here to find anything else out.

Just curious: what head do you have? You personally put on the head and it had the D (not heart) chamber right? What compression do you get?

MattS...I personally put this "D" chamber oval port head on the block. It is off of a '78 Pinto, so I figure that this is the corrct head, but definatly the "D" chamber and oval ports. As to the compression, it has been too cold here to even go out and start the thing. Once it warms up a bit here in a few days I will check those numbers. I am on the verge of putting a "D" port with one of my wore out slider cams back in it. This thing is driving me crazy. Tax return time I think that I might convince the War Dept. that I need a new cam and get either the Essy 2277 (IIRC) or the A237, just need to do a little digging around on it for the better of the two.

Sqrlcage...The pads on the front and rear are in ecellent shape, and the rotors are not blue from being over heated. The last that I checked, all those parts worked fine. But with a 20 year old car, anything can happen at any time.

Jim, I've heard of the D port oval port, but I don't know what the compression ratio of those is. I wonder if it's higher since its originally an NA head????

So I hit up a buddy of mine who's fooled with pintos and svo's for years, and he thought the compression on n/a was higher after 75, even though the head looks the same.
Then I found this post saying that 77-80 is 9:1

http://www.fordpinto.com/index.php?optio...1#msg32201

This page shows the 1978 pinto options and lists compression as 9:1 so this may be the problem?

So like the one guy said, if I back the timing off 4* then I should be alright (which I have already done to a point--timing set at 8* now). Should I go with 4* more???

But just to get down to the nitty gritty of where to start here are the stats:

The head was shaved just a bit, I don't remember how much, to make it true.

The block was decked 0.010" just for insurance, and bored out 0.030".

The head has the oversized valves in it (1.89I, 1.59E).

Dished forced induction pistons from Diamond and moly rings (Perfect Circle).

So the bottom line is what would my compression ratio be with this set up??? I will get some numbers up here in the next day or so on this. Is there a formula for figuring this out???

Where should the timing be set at for optimum (or there abouts) running???

And where should the fuel pressure be (again or there abouts) set at???

Thanks for the help so far, I really think that this is the right track to get it running better.

Our motors are very similar.
bore - 3.810
stroke - 3.126
combustion chamber - 64cc measured - D port BV with mild unshrouding, same as oval ports.
head gasket - 8.5cc - could be a little off
piston dish - 9.35cc - Diamond pt #29000
deck height - 0 - Had mine 0 decked

Comes out to 8.135:1
With a flat top piston (pinto) it would be 9:1

I wish I could help more. Hope you find the problem soon.

Compression results would, at least, be a quick reality check. I get 155 across all 4 with 98k on it. It was the same at 78k a year and a half ago.

Hey Doug, what's the calculation you used on the numbers above to get the ratio? I've always been curious.
