Safe Boost Levels?

My boost controller should be here by the weekend. Big Grin

At this point my car has,

Modern Performance big valve extrude honed head, Roller Cam with degree-able cam gear, ported matched 87/88 intakes, KN Cone, ATR 3" exhaust, ported header, And its getting a FMS intercooler installed Saturday along with a 255 fuel pump. Hopefully it will be able to handle some decent boost.

The boost controller is a two stage so i will set one for 93 octane and the other for cam2 110 octane.

First what do you guys think safe boost levels are for each, second any recommendations for a boost gauge, one that wont look like it doesn't belong and will be pretty accurate.

Going to order the t3/4 turbo and 55lb injectors this week, then when i have some more money the p.i.m.p and a wb02.

After that i will have to let the race bikes get some love (by that i mean take over the bank account, haha.) and figure out what to do to the car over the winter.

I would reccomend getting some seat time once you get it running right to make sure every thing is a-ok before going further...

For safe boost levels, A wide band, and a afpr would be a good first step to finding out. Safe is subjective. On a stock T3, 22psi seems to be about the limit. I would think with your increased flow, 20psi would be about the same cfm as 22 with stock components. With a hybrid turbo and 55lb injectors you will max out the stock VAM before you max out the engine and turbo....

Just my opinion and 2a cents

You're not going to be able to up the boost too much with that little intercooler. I'm no expert, but I, personally, wouldn't really go over 20psi with stock timing on that thing.

Stock timing? What timing? Ignition timing is 12 advance and cam was degreed by MP.

The 110 octane should help protect against detonation and make up for the small IC no?

110 octane will help, but the fms intercooler is going to be a restriction to making big numbers. Elevated IATs are going to cause a loss of power (less O2 per volume), and nessecitate using less agreesive timing (also less power) than would be needed with an upgraded intercooler

Gocha, hadn't figured the IC would be a limiting factor. I will keep my eye out for a larger one.

Just re-read your other post. The car doesn't have the stock VAM, it has a shitty MAF conversion.

Maf conversion isn't the best for the 2.3 turbo computers. They have no native 12v source at the EEC to properly control the 12V maf.

I would assume yours it hooked up to the battery. Which bounces around abit on voltage. You can clean up the power some with a relay. So I have read. I didn't have much luck either. What kind of chip does the car have?

Almost anything is better than the vam...even a $hitty maf conversion....almost.

I wouldnt do anything above 19psi until you install a wideband. The wideband will tell you if you are lean. Its the best initial safety measure when turning up the boost. Ive run 22-23 psi with my FMS on a cool 65-75 degree outside temp on my 50trim/stageIII. I've run 26psi with FMS and water/meth kit. All with 36# injectors, fpr slightly turned up, AND VAM.

AEM Wideband will only cost you roughly $180, and it beats the hell out of the cost of your time to do a head gasket, or worse, the cost of a damaged motor internals.

Turbine Outlet temp is going to be WAY lower with a Hybrid than a T3. There a guys running big turbos without intercoolers for that exact reason...

Do you mean compressor outlet temp? Not trying to be a smart a**, just making sure I understand you correctly.
