Running Rich

Just got a 88TC w/auto and I'm new to the forum. Thanks for all the great information on this site. I am having a couple of problems with the car. I ran a compression check and that looks good. I cleaned up the egr valve and made sure it functions. I pulled the plugs (carbon fouled) and cleaned them up and reset the gap. I do need to put new plug wires on. Overall, the engine seems solid. However, it is running very rich, and I can't seem to get any eec codes out of it. Any ideas? Thanks

Welcome and congratulations on the new car.

Are you getting no codes at all or are you getting 11 across the board?

Pull the vacuum line off the FPR and see if there is gas in it or even the smell of gas. If yes, then replace the regulator. If no, you probably should run fuel pressure checks.

If the plug wires are Ford Motorcraft and not causing problems, leave them on. Most other types/brands of plug wires will cause problems sooner or later.

Thanks for the reply Pete.

I just seem to be getting 11. I tried the information in the Tech Section, and it seemed like it just initialized, and didn't give any codes. I also tried the koer test, and there was no change in engine rpm or anything, and no codes. The check engine light is on all the time.

One of the plug wires has about 6 times the resistance of the others. Can't tell if they are Motorcraft. All of them are pretty grimy and some of the boots show heat stress. I'll spend the bucks and get a set of Motorcraft.

If the check engine light is on, some code should come up out of continuous memory codes.

If the EEC wont give codes, check to be sure the 02 ground wire is connected. It is an orange wire with a ring terminal on the end that is conneted to one of the 2 bolts on the turbo inlet elbow. If the 02 ground isnt connected, the EEC will not output codes. Also, if the 02 ground is not connected, the EEC reads zero volts from the 02 sensor, which it thinks is a lean condition, so the EEC tries to correct the problem by increasing injector pulse width to richen it up. When it reaches the adaptive fuel control limit, it will turn on the CEL.
