Rubber round rear glass

Howdy from a newly signed up forum member...

I've been TC fan for a while, but just got around to picking up an '88 this summer.

The hood and top of the right fender have irreparable oxidation and there are a few small spots in other areas where the clear pealed ..about the size of a nickle or quarter. I've tried sanding and feathering to save as much as possible but the factory color under the clear is too thin and sands to primer almost as soon as the clear is gone. So, I'm going to paint from the body crease up ...at least. Maybe the whole car.

The the lip of the rubber round the rear glass overlaps the rear roof line and pillar so I'll have to move it. It looks like a gasket, but I'm not sure. Is it wrapping gasket or just a single plane seal? I don't want to yank on it and tear it if it's re-usable. My Chilton manual doesn't seem to talk about the rear glass anywhere.

Does the glass have to come out with or before the seal or can I just pull that seal and mask the glass?

Any help would be appreciated.

Bryan,
I don't know the exact manner in which the rubber is secured but several people have been replacing that just recently. Do not destroy that rubber as finding a replacement is very diffcult. There have been some on evilBay but you have to buy the whole rear window to get it.

I removed my rear glass from my car and the molding unfortunately is not bonded to the glass. It comes as a two piece molding. The base connects the the lip of the glass and then the exterior section attaches to the base. After years of being attached to the car and drying out, you realy cannot detach the molding from the glass, so if you are removing be very careful. The base tends to crack and then the plastic piece which is visible cracks also. I have one oem spare window with molding left. I can try to get you folks more, but shipping would be a bit tricky. I got my spare for 300. Good luck to all.

eek...I don't know that it's worth removing if I'll have to replace it. I think I'll try to find a work around. Maybe hold the lip up off the body till the paint is dry.

Thanks for the info qt

I had the rear window moulding replaced at a glass shop. It is some kind of "universal" moulding, but in fact it was a 99.999% match to what came off. No problems and looks great. You would never know. Window definitely does have to come out to replace it. I think I paid about $150 for the whole mess. Worth it. That guy busted his A$$ getting that window out.

Yes , the window does have to come out , I got 2 of these new in the box and they go both under the glass and on the outside of the glass, its a 1 piece molding that has a groove in the middle where the glass fits into, one side seals from the inside and the other side you see . Im soon to be buying a NOS rear glass and it should come with that molding . So I may have an extra . Thanks , hope that helps ya . D.Wilder
