Rough start up!

I have had a problem with random rough starts. It has come to the point where every time its started it idles rough, sounds like it knocks, sputters and allmost dies if you give it any gas. After a few minutes of idleing it seems fine. The TPS is goin bad and it seems to idle high sometimes at 1500rpm and once or twice has idled at 2500rpm. So its prety obvious that the TPS is bad, could that be causing the EEC to not feed it enough gas until it has warmed up enough ? Car as less than 2K on complete tune up, except O2 sensor, which looks original and the Fuel pressure was good as of a month ago. I am goin to pull the old TPS off get the number off it and get a new one at Ford. Any input would be greatly apreciated [Image: smile.gif]

Have you actually tested the TPS? It might be part of the problem but I think there may be more. Have you pulled the codes on it? let us know what you get.

The TPS at one point, before the car was on the road, was stuck at 4.6 volts, the injectors wouldnt fire and the car would't start. I sprayed starter fluid in the throttle body and got it to start. It was idleing at 2500rpm, when it warmed up the idle came to 1000rpm, checked the voltage from the TPS then and it was at .96 volts after the car had warmed. I havent ran the codes latley but will in the morning

Ok so the new TPS from ford is in the car. First few starts were prety smooth but it didnt seem right. I pulled the codes and got code 81 KOEO, KOER the idle went up as it should and then when it idled down it stalled! Got it started and it didnt want to idle, i had to tap the gas a few times to keep it from stalling, however i got codes 74,77 and 25....any sugestions ?

First of all, O2 sensor has no effect on how motor runs for the first few minutes after a cold start.

KOEO 81: Is the BCS electrical connector connected? If disconnected, this code will be set.

KOER codes 74, 77: operator error - you didnt tap the brake and do a WOT at the dynamic response code. 25: will always be there if you dont tap on the intake to simulate detonation during the test.

Dies during test: Is the TB, throttle plate, etc, clean? If so, the base idle speed is set too low. See tech articles for info on setting base idle.

25 is the Knock sensor, don't worry about it

74 is the BOO, you didn't step on th ebrake

77 is operator error, don't worry about it

81 I got to look up. it could be the BCS or the IAC. Try unplugging and plugging in the IAC connector a few times. I think Jeff has descrivbed testing the IAC in past post so look for that.

Yea, the old BCS was pulled out because it was falling apart, thats not a shocker. Ill go to the FAQ and try to set the base idle, I notice that the car idles at 1200RPM but when I smack the dash the tach bounces and drops to 1K rpm lol so I can't believe the tach is too acurate lol thanks for your help Jeff and Pete [Image: smile.gif]

I parked my car at work and went drinking, got a ride and when I had left work the car had sat at that point about 30 hours. Started it and she stalled. Turned the key again and gave the gas peddal a tap, idle was real rough and it allmost died. The engine caught itself and seemed to idle ok for a few seconds. I decided to pull off and she stalled again(could have been my fault, but I havent stalled a 5 speed in years) So I start it again and pulled off, when I took it out of gear about twenty feet away from where I was parked it stalled again. Atfer starting it for a fourth time it seemed ok from there. Not sure what too look for from here, could it just be a vac. hose ? I get 30 Psi at the fuel rail at idle. Im totaly lost and after a horible day at work I dont feel like dealing with a car that keeps stalling [Image: frown.gif] any sugestions ?

30psi is a bit low.... Best case, replace the fuel filter and see if it comes up to the 40's (sorry, but doubtful). If not, my guess would be that as you said in your sig, fuel pump is next.

Run the fuel system diagnostics and find out what is needed. See the Technical Articles.
