Rings?

My car doesn't need rings but I'm about to start an engine rebuild(hopefully) and the block needs rings. To the best of my knowledge, it hasn't been rebuilt so the pistons are stock size. If the bores aren't scored can I just have it honed and put stock size rings back in? Or, if they are mildy scored, could I have it bored .010" over and just get new rings to avoid having to purchase new pistons?

DONT HONE IT .010 UNLESS YOU ARE GOING TO GET NEW PISTONS!!!!! The engine wil destroy itself very fast. Measure the bores If the bores are still in good shape and still has most of the hone marks I would just leave it or if you are really set on rings in get a set of moly rings and either have the engine profesionally honed or dont hone it at all. Most of the cheap cylinder hones that you can rent or buy have the wrong grit stone and can make the rings not break in correctly. With 138K on the engine it should still be in OK shape. Good luck

The bores have to be measured. If there is little or no ridge at the top of the cylinder
that might be an indication of the amount of wear but not a substitute for measuring the bores in six locations each. Bores do not wear "straight" up and down, nor do they wear "round" If an overbore is needed, you cannot reuse the stock pistons. For our engines the smallest overbore you can get pistons for is .020 over (that I know of)

Sctur, it's not the engine in my car, it actually has less mileage. I think I need to rephrase my question. Umm, my question is... if the bores aren't too out of round, and the cross hatch is still ok, do I have to hone it? If I don't have to hone it, can I just just new stock size rings? I also wasn't going to do it myself, I'm not stupid. I was going to take it to a local shop. Will honing it remove enough excess of material to require new, expensive, over size pistons and rings?

Did the engien have good compression do you know? Personally I would pull the head check for a ridge, and check the cylinder walls for scratches and honemarks. If it looks ok I wouldnt even pull the pistons out. Check the bearings for scratches and use plasti guage to measure clearences. If it checks ok just leave the bearings too. Well I guess it really depends on what you plan on doing with the engine but if its just going to be a street car, I would just spend the money on the head, intake, exhaust, and turbo. These engines really are alot tougher and longer lasting than most people realize. I have a friend that has 380,000 plus mile on his car and just barely blew the head gasket! This engine just barely had a ridge and still had most of the hone marks. He just put on a ported stack valve head, ported intake and exhaust manifolds and a full 3" exhaust, he is running 14.70 at 92mph! this is on a 380,000 mile short block! It has only run synthetic oil though. When you get it apart tell us whats going on, and how it looks. have fun building that sucker!

It's JUST the block and rotating assembly so I can't do a compression test. I won't know anything for sure
untill I take it apart

I'm not going to get in on the hone or not to hone question, but I will recommend Total-Seal rings when/if you replace them. You can also get them in a file-to-fit version so you can fine tune the ring "gaps" to what your block requires.
