Reverse Gear Clash ??

How common is a harsh gear clash when selecting reverse? My wifes 85 is a problem for her , are there any cures , tricks or fluids that work better than others? The clutch is fairly new though I do feel it catches to close to the floor, only about 2 inches of pedal and your rolling. The trans has a new steel bearing collar Fluid is fresh with spec mercon. I also have an 86 with the same concern though mine is not as bad. Any ideas would be helpfull or is it just a fact of life? Thanks Rick B.

Going into 5th and then reverse works sometimes. Let the clutch out in neutral and waiting for the trans to stop sometimes works

Yep...no synchros for reverse.

I'll grind it occasionally if I'm parallel parking or something when you have been going in 1st and then try to go into reverse too quickly.

Like Pete said, wait a couple of seconds for the tranny to stop before going into reverse.

My reverse used to grind about 75% of the time shifting into to it, under lots of different circumstances. Now I just slide it over, go into 5th then back down to Reverse and it works everytime with no grinding.

Interesting that some folks talk about going into 5th then to reverse. In my TC that isn't possible. There is a form of lockout I believe. Put it in 5th and reverse is no longer an option.

My TC doesn't have the lock out, however, my Isuzu did...

I have an '85 that has the same problem, I just put it into first before reverse. Works for me.

The 86, 87, and now the 88, ,have all done the same thing, and sometimes, when going from 5th to rev. it will lock out, but hey-sometimes when going from 2nd to 1st downshifting at lights, it will lock out. Let off the clutch very slowly and just barely, and gently ease it into gear, works for both problems...

Now that I think about it...I have to do that too occasionally to get mine in reverse. It's just become such a habit I didn't even think of mentioning it.
