Restoring the Turbocoupe....! a 15min read.

When I first got this car, it was another Ford with a small engine to me. Sporty transportation. I'll get that Supra next summer. (stop laughing, I was serious.........then). Then I finally got the car ready to drive, just in time for spring. I went from a '95 Tercel 4-door, to a large sport coupe that was surprisingly FAST!!!

Point is, I've just started restoring my 1987 Thunderbird Turbocoupe, to the quality it deserves. I've been mulling over this all winter, but never really got any work done, (besides sanding the paint off of the intercooler face, and the *stock* air box). But over the last few weeks, I've figured out what I'm doing with it.

I looked for rust. I knew I had some, I just wasn't sure how much, and where. It was looking a little ripe, the paint was bubbling a lot around the rear quarters and doors. This was the deciding factor if I would restore and keep it, or get the body done, sell it, and buy something else.

I gutted the interior on Saturday. Nothing left, aft of the dash, but a console and a carpet. [Image: biggrin.gif] Maybe it was the sun and fresh air, or the beer that made me go demolition style on my car. I had to wait until Ange got home to look at the panels. She was out grocery shopping, and I called and asked her to pick up a trouble-light on her travels. Yes, shamefully, I have a large two-car garage, but no trouble-light. So, While putting all the screws BACK in their respective holes, a lesson I learned last summer while taking the dash apart, I proceeded to remove all the insulation I could find, and drink more beer before Ange got home. 8)

When she arrived, I got the light plugged in as fast as I could, and checked the panels. I almost laughed out loud. The body was perfect. Not a bump or blemish inside. A bit dusty, but nothing that can hinder the body job.

Now, after taking the day off yesterday so I could get more work done on the car. I know, troublesome to lie to your boss so you can tinker in the garage, but I got lots done. I really had nothing to do at work anyway. I guess it was just more efficient for me to stay at home. [Image: biggrin.gif] I like the sound of that.

I'm working as hard as possible to get this car done before I go home in June. (just the body this round)

Sorry this was so long. Just a problem of me living in the garage for three days, and not having any access to the Internet to spread this out over a few days.

Sounds like a familiar story... I went to change my heater core and ended up with nothing in the interior but the steering column LOL !

From there it just went on and on...and as they say "the rest is history".

Have fun !!!

Thanks guys. Well, looks like one section of rust is a touch worse than I thought. I guess I will be looking for a welder. > [Image: frown.gif]

Oh, well. I'm still just as excited to have started working on it. ....... almost as excited. Otherwise this post would be another 5 pager. [Image: wink.gif]
