Hello fellow friends. I was going to remove the turbo on my 84 the other day. Did some looking at it and I'm sure I can get at it with a wrench.. My question is does anyone have any tricks of the trade in this one? Modded tools or anything for getting at these easier and more efficiently?

If you have a disposable wrench, grind it down so it has a thinner profile and that way you should be able to get the box end on there to break the nut loose. Also - if it's never been off before soak the nuts/studs with PB Blaster for a day or so. If it still gives you trouble after that, hit it with a blowtorch.
Most people will tell you that it's easier to remove the turbo and manifold together as a unit, then separate the turbo from the manifold once it's all out. Personally - for me it's just as easy to remove the turbo from the manifold and leave the manifold bolted up to the engine, but I have done it more than a few times so YMMV.
If you are removing the down elbow from the turbo you'll definitely want to soak that with PB Plaster or similar penetrating oil. Be careful because it's not difficult to break those studs.

And if you should need to replace the studs that hold the turbo to the manifold, you can get new studs and nuts from any Cummins dealer. There's a part number for both in the Part Numbers forum.

That is an excellent article by Brian.
I do recommend the use of teflon goop (liquid) rather than teflon tape on any connection in a lubrication system. If a piece of tape gets broken off it could stop up an oil passage, like in the turbo where the passages are small.
The modified wrench is key to this operation.
