Rejuvenating old hard dash

Guys I have found several nice dashes with no cracks at the jy. The biggest problem is when I test it by pushing my finger down on it, it cracks! It seems they are hard and brittle. Is there a way to soften it back up, so that I dont have to use the finger pressure test?

I've heard that if you coat it liberally with vaseline, and let it really soak in, it'll soften it up. If you had an old dash, or could get a decent size piece of one, it may be worth trying.

I have been "experimenting", for several years, with using mink oil (a paste type substance) on the dash of the white car, to try to keep it soft. Granted it's a garage kept car, but so far so good. It did see one heater core change and it didn't crack.

Mink oil is often used to treat leather products to keep them soft and uncracked. Shoe shops used to carry it. I got my last container at a Tractor Supply but I think you can get it from them online also.

It needs to soak in, like Vinnie said about the Vaseline. It's not an overnight proposition.

Thanks guys, It will give both a shot. I can get a jy unit for $30, so its worth a shot I will test both products using half on one side and half on the other. Stay tunedSmile
